Carl Weathers Interview By: Michael Dance

Carl Weathers is a living legend -- Apollo Creed himself in the first four Rocky movies. And hey, more importantly than that, Chubbs in Happy Gilmore. (Like I said, a legend.) Luckily TheCinemaSource got to sit down one-on-one with Mr. Weathers for a chat about The Comebacks, his new movie.

"This film spoofs everything that's ever had to do with sports, including movies," Weathers says. "Real events. Imagined events. Events that you could possibly think somehow have something to do with real life or otherwise. That's the storyline. No," he chuckles. "It's good for people who just like to laugh, and see this silly thing, and eat popcorn, and spill your drink on the person next to you, and get punched out as a result, and they're laughing as they beat you. We're gonna have a lot of that. Wet seats and popcorn sticking to things.

"We tear into everything," he continues. "Nothing is sacred. The people aren't sacred, the icons aren't sacred, the great sports moments aren't sacred, when people cried about what happened on the field and lost their homes and their first borns to bets - we tear it all asunder. Chew it up, spit it out, and say, okay, next."

Sadly, sometimes his stream-of-consciousness slows down into actual sentences as he explains to us the finer points of the movie. "I play the assistant coach, the intrepid assistant coach, Freddy Wiseman. Dig that name. And Freddy's a guy who really has all the ability to coach, and who really wants to support Lambeau, the main coach, David Koechner. But he keeps losing at everything - so Freddy decides to take Lambeau out. We had a lot of fun. Hopefully audiences are going to just laugh, because if you can lampoon it, we lampoon it."

Jokes aside, Weathers is happy to be part of a simple comedy. "I think people really need to go to the theater and have a good laugh, because there's just so much darkness out there," he says. "You read the news, you hear the news, you don't want to be the news, it just goes on and on. To be in The Comebacks, I was really just happy to be a part of it."

Happy to be a part of a movie featuring scenes of horse masturbation and overweight grown men in their underwear' "Yeah, true. The horse thing. It's like, oh man," he says, cracking up. "This is what my career has come to."

Don't forget about the scene with Matthew Lawrence in a tutu. "I think part of it is, [our director] Tom Brady wears a tutu," he says, utterly straight-faced. "And if you're going to have a guy put you into a tutu, you want to see him demonstrate it first. His wife says that's one of his favorite outfits. He's got multiple colors in the closet. Tom Brady in a tutu." And no, in case you were wondering, this is not Tom Brady the sports star. "He thinks he's the Tom Brady who's the quarterback, but we had to set him straight on that."

For all his jokes, though, Weathers seems content above all else. "Yeah, I've been doing voice work, and directing, behind the camera. I just got back from the UK, I just directed a project for the BBC. So I'm back in it now. I was away for a while, raising cattle and doing strange things, and it was time to go back to work. Here I am. Mr. Comedy."
