It took Transformers Revenge of the Fallen two weeks to become the highest grossing movie of the year. Despite generally negative reviews and reports that the film was rushed in its writing and post-production (Michael Bay left the Japan premiere early to finalize the last of the effect shots) it has since moved beyond the $300 million mark, and, as of yesterday, has passed the domestic gross of the first film. Its $637 million worldwide is also good for year’s best in that category, leaving the only records it hasn’t broken still held by Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. Thankfully, there is enough competition in the coming weeks (aka Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince) to prevent Bay’s giant robots from surpassing the box office of last summer’s smash hit, and while I’d be interested in seeing a third film, I really hope they revise the script before they film it next time.

This past weekend, the film that sought to knock Transformers off the top was none other than the third entry in the Ice Age series and they had something of a photo finish. Once the actual numbers came out, Optimus Prime edged out Scratch and company, but the $42.5 million opening was still solid for an animated movie at this time of year.

The real disappointment was Michael Mann’s Public Enemies which managed a decent $26.1 million debut with a little over $40 million for the whole 5 day stretch. The film wasn’t on par with Heat or Collateral, but even a lackluster Michael Mann film is better than most of what has been released so far this summer. It’s a shame it never found an audience.
