The sensitive document, turned out to be a liability form that Travolta signed releasing the paramedics from all liability.  Initially, the Travolta’s refused to send their son to the hospital, but instead wanted to go to straight to their private jet at the airport and head back to Florida to seek treatment.  Travolta then changed his mind and agreed to go to the hospital.  The trial began September 21 and is expected to last several weeks.

Building on its strategy of delivering quality branded content to people around the world, The Walt Disney Company has agreed to acquire Marvel Entertainment, Inc. in a stock and cash transaction, the companies announced today.

Under the terms of the agreement and based on the closing price of Disney on August 28, 2009, Marvel shareholders would receive a total of $30 per share in cash plus approximately 0.745 Disney shares for each Marvel share they own. At closing, the amount of cash and stock will be adjusted if necessary so that the total value of the Disney stock issued as merger consideration based on its trading value at that time is not less than 40% of the total merger consideration.

Based on the closing price of Disney stock on Friday, August 28, the transaction value is $50 per Marvel share or approximately $4 billion.

“This transaction combines Marvel’s strong global brand and world-renowned library of characters including Iron Man, Spider-Man, X-Men, Captain America, Fantastic Four and Thor with Disney’s creative skills, unparalleled global portfolio of entertainment properties, and a business structure that maximizes the value of creative properties across multiple platforms and territories,” said Robert A. Iger, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company. “Ike Perlmutter and his team have done an impressive job of nurturing these properties and have created significant value. We are pleased to bring this talent and these great assets to Disney.”

“We believe that adding Marvel to Disney’s unique portfolio of brands provides significant opportunities for long-term growth and value creation,” Iger said.

“Disney is the perfect home for Marvel’s fantastic library of characters given its proven ability to expand content creation and licensing businesses,” said Ike Perlmutter, Marvel’s Chief Executive Officer. “This is an unparalleled opportunity for Marvel to build upon its vibrant brand and character properties by accessing Disney’s tremendous global organization and infrastructure around the world.”

Under the deal, Disney will acquire ownership of Marvel including its more than 5,000 Marvel characters. Mr. Perlmutter will oversee the Marvel properties, and will work directly with Disney’s global lines of business to build and further integrate Marvel’s properties.

The Boards of Directors of Disney and Marvel have each approved the transaction, which is subject to clearance under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act, certain non-United States merger control regulations, effectiveness of a registration statement with respect to Disney shares issued in the transaction and other customary closing conditions. The agreement will require the approval of Marvel shareholders. Marvel was advised on the transaction by BofA Merrill Lynch.

Crazy stuff huh? Three big updates have come since the initial annoucement:

In a conference call, the companies said that the deals for movies for characters at other studios (Spider-Man, X-Men, etc.) will stay in place under the terms set by Marvel and the other studios.

John Lasseter met with Marvel last week about a possible team-up between Marvel and Pixar and got “pretty excited, pretty fast.” They say there’s definitely an opportunity there.

The deal with Paramount Pictures to distribute five films–”Iron Man 2,” “Thor,” “Captain America,” “The Avengers” and “Iron Man 3″–stays in place as well, but Disney would like to self-distribute down the line. “When the time comes we’ll take a closer look at it.”

Am I the only one who thinks that a Pixar/Marvel movie would be the greatest marriage of quality, craftsmanship, and entertainment since… ever? It may turn out to be the only way to pull off an Avengers movie without having to half-ass the special effects. Think about it, and in the meantime, what do you think of the buyout? Not more than 10 minutes after James Cameron’s Avatar preview finally hit the net, The Wolfman threw its hat in the ring. The trailer holds up rather well, despite the supposed troubles with the final film, and the cast alone should make this one a must-see. Mickey Rourke’s getup not satisfying your fanboy delights in the bootlegged Iron Man 2 Comic-Con footage? Not to worry. All signs are pointing towards an appropriately armored second iteration of the suit, most likely during the course of the new film. Designs on Marvel’s website show the new comic book tie-in outfit, and unlike Marvel’s usual designs, this one has the feel of something we might actually see on screen.

No word yet on whether or not this is the way the production team on the sequel is actually going, or whether the comic book artists are just tooting their own horn. It does seem to make sense that in a full on fight with Robert Downey Jr., he’d need a bit more in the way of armored protection, right?

Iron Man 2 Comic-Con Bootleg Footage

I’ve honestly run out of things to say about The Twilight Saga: New Moon. I think Chris Weitz is a fantastic director and I’m chomping at the bit to see his full director’s cut of The Golden Compass, but nothing except the handful of glimpses at the end of this trailer make me think this film will be anything other than a giant cash cow. In lieu of any other derogatory remarks, I will instead use the brand new film synopsis as a way of breaching the gap before we get to the new trailer:

Grab it while it’s hot. You know that Comic-Con footage from the Iron Man 2 panel everybody’s been so excited about? Well some sneaky s.o.b. managed to record the clips, despite the ridiculous security presence, and has now uploaded the footage online for all to see. Knowing Jon Favreau, he’ll probably be working on a shorter, less revealing trailer to debut soon anyway to give us a taste of the movie in all it’s 1080p glory, but until that time, this might be the best look we’ll get. Samuel L. Jackson is looking great as Nick Fury, and Mickey Rourke’s Whiplash seems like quite the mean Russian. With Black Widow and War Machine glimpses thrown in, despite the video quality, how can you lose? The audio’s a little hit or miss too, but honestly, why are you still reading any of this? Check out the video below while we square our shoulders and await Paramount’s cease and desist email. Check this one out, next summer.

Exclusive Iron Man 2 Comic-Con Bootleg Footage

You’ve read the reports, you’ve seen the pictures, and some lucky few of you were actually there to witness it, but we here at the site missed out on Comic-Con this year. Due to forces beyond our control we were unable to continue our annual tradition of sending writers from our site to the big industry shindig in San Diego, and it seems like it might have been one of the worst years to miss. That’s not going to stop us, at least belatedly, from rounding up all the juicy tidbits from this year’s show and providing our two cents on the upcoming 2009-2010 film season. Without further ado, lets get started…

Jonah Hex

The Jonah Hex panel at Comic-Con revealed multiple surprises. The first, that the film would be a violent and bloody affair (our money is on an R rating when all is said and done) and that the footage shown would reveal not one, but two Megan Fox sex scenes. In between the other news from around the Con, a tidbit regarding Oliver Stone’s new Wall Street movie was dropped citing Mr. Brolin himself as Javier Bardem’s replacement as the villain of the film. More on this as the story develops. The kickass new poster art can be viewed below:

Yes everybody and their mother wanted to feast their eyes on James Cameron’s Pandora goodness at this year’s event (hell I would have considered flying out myself just to take it in) and out of the 25 odd minutes that were shown the consensus seems to be that the movie, while not as revolutionary as previously believed, will still manage to kick all kinds of ass. The surprise was that Cameron announced that August 21st will be unofficially christened “Avatar Day” as the studio plans to buy up all the Imax screen space they can to show 15 minutes of the film in Imax 3D…. FOR FREE!!!! That’s right, if you get your butt to almost any Imax screen in the country, you will be privy to a free 15 minute look at Cameron’s latest epic. How cool is that?

Oh yeah, and for those still wondering about the plot, here’s the official press release:

In the epic action adventure fantasy AVATAR, James Cameron, the director of Titanic, takes us to a spectacular new world beyond our imagination. On the distant moon Pandora, a reluctant hero embarks on a journey of redemption, discovery and unexpected love — as he leads a heroic battle to save a civilization.

Now, here’s the actual news from the panel. One Gary Oldman decided to drop this doozy of a scoop about Batman 3, “we start shooting early next year, you didn’t hear that from me.” Between when he left the stage and when the nearest reporter got him to elaborate on that explosive sound bite, Warnerbros. already had him back pedaling. David Goyer has also since released a statement saying that Nolan is “busy with Inception” and that any further film plans remain unconfirmed. Look for this story to continue to develop over the next few months as Inception gets closer to completion.

Tron Legacy

Besides a ridiculously cool Flynn Arcade presentation, the unveiling of the new cycle, and showing off the concept trailer from last year’s Comic-Con in 3D, the filmmakers behind Tron Legacy also debuted some new footage from the film that had Hall H roaring its approval. The concept footage has made its way online in good quality as a sort of teaser trailer for the flick, which can be seen below, and new reports reveal that Michael Sheen has been cast as the not-necessarily-human villain in the new film. Only time will tell.

Roland Emmerich. End of the world. Again. Despite the audience fatigue surrounding disaster movies, one director has managed to produce the kind of visually destructive spectacle that was once reserved for the Statue of Liberty at the end of Planet of the Apes. Between Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow, the earth is never safe when Emmerich steps behind the lens, and if the footage at the Con was enough to get James Cameron to geek out about it in front of a reporter, you know this one’s going to be one hell of a ride. The new decidedly horrifying poster art is below.

Iron Man 2

You’ve probably heard all about this one already. They showed some crappy green screen behind the scenes footage, Robert Downey Jr. told them to grow a pair and give the audience some real stuff, and Jon Favreau obliged. Among the highlights, Scarlett Johanssen kicking the crap out of a load of goons, Mickey Rourke hurling his character’s trademark electrified whips through the air, and Rhodes getting the chance to try on War Machine’s armor for the first time. Some new pictures follow this post as a way of tiding you over until the trailer gets officially released some time this fall.

The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day

Not many people are choosing to report on this one which I think is sad as I just wrote a whole column wondering where the finished film is. Turns out it is coming out on November 1st, the panel at Comic-Con was an absolute blast, and the trailer which was supposed to premiere to the world yesterday is on its way out for national consumption. I will be sure to add the trailer below here when it finally premieres.

If it seems like there was a lot going on, that’s because there was. There were a lot more panels and events that I haven’t even had a chance to cover for you here, but hope you will learn more about them as the studious officially unveil their tentpole movies. Fingers crossed that next summer manages to be everything this summer could have been but wasn’t.

I’m going to come right out and say that I really enjoyed the first Wanted movie. The trippy visuals, a script that hit all the notes I was looking for, and a cast that fit together brilliantly made it one of those summer movies you know you’re going to buy once it comes out on DVD. I even went out and bought the ridiculously overblown edition with the leather cover and all the bells and whistles.

Mark Millar, the writer behind the Wanted comic, immediately began expressing interest in helping the filmmakers to develop a new story for a sequel. The only problem SPOILER WARNING is that with Angelina Jolie dead, I thought the studio would consider it too much of a risk to let James McAvoy try and carry the movie himself, not to mention not having the chance to get Morgan Freeman to say “Shoot this motherfucker” again SPOILER END. But what do I know about the way movie studio executives think?

At the Kick-Ass panel at this year’s Comic-Con, Millar revealed that not only was the script for Wanted 2 complete, but that the project was about to begin shooting the following week. The story centers on the international league of assassins mentioned in books 5 and 6 of the original comic. Look for this one to hit theaters next summer at the earliest.
