Don’t believe me? I don’t blame you. Here’s the official press release:

Building on its strategy of delivering quality branded content to people around the world, The Walt Disney Company has agreed to acquire Marvel Entertainment, Inc. in a stock and cash transaction, the companies announced today.

Under the terms of the agreement and based on the closing price of Disney on August 28, 2009, Marvel shareholders would receive a total of $30 per share in cash plus approximately 0.745 Disney shares for each Marvel share they own. At closing, the amount of cash and stock will be adjusted if necessary so that the total value of the Disney stock issued as merger consideration based on its trading value at that time is not less than 40% of the total merger consideration.

Based on the closing price of Disney stock on Friday, August 28, the transaction value is $50 per Marvel share or approximately $4 billion.

“This transaction combines Marvel’s strong global brand and world-renowned library of characters including Iron Man, Spider-Man, X-Men, Captain America, Fantastic Four and Thor with Disney’s creative skills, unparalleled global portfolio of entertainment properties, and a business structure that maximizes the value of creative properties across multiple platforms and territories,” said Robert A. Iger, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company. “Ike Perlmutter and his team have done an impressive job of nurturing these properties and have created significant value. We are pleased to bring this talent and these great assets to Disney.”

“We believe that adding Marvel to Disney’s unique portfolio of brands provides significant opportunities for long-term growth and value creation,” Iger said.

“Disney is the perfect home for Marvel’s fantastic library of characters given its proven ability to expand content creation and licensing businesses,” said Ike Perlmutter, Marvel’s Chief Executive Officer. “This is an unparalleled opportunity for Marvel to build upon its vibrant brand and character properties by accessing Disney’s tremendous global organization and infrastructure around the world.”

Under the deal, Disney will acquire ownership of Marvel including its more than 5,000 Marvel characters. Mr. Perlmutter will oversee the Marvel properties, and will work directly with Disney’s global lines of business to build and further integrate Marvel’s properties.

The Boards of Directors of Disney and Marvel have each approved the transaction, which is subject to clearance under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act, certain non-United States merger control regulations, effectiveness of a registration statement with respect to Disney shares issued in the transaction and other customary closing conditions. The agreement will require the approval of Marvel shareholders. Marvel was advised on the transaction by BofA Merrill Lynch.

Crazy stuff huh? Three big updates have come since the initial annoucement:

In a conference call, the companies said that the deals for movies for characters at other studios (Spider-Man, X-Men, etc.) will stay in place under the terms set by Marvel and the other studios.

John Lasseter met with Marvel last week about a possible team-up between Marvel and Pixar and got “pretty excited, pretty fast.” They say there’s definitely an opportunity there.

The deal with Paramount Pictures to distribute five films–”Iron Man 2,” “Thor,” “Captain America,” “The Avengers” and “Iron Man 3″–stays in place as well, but Disney would like to self-distribute down the line. “When the time comes we’ll take a closer look at it.”

Am I the only one who thinks that a Pixar/Marvel movie would be the greatest marriage of quality, craftsmanship, and entertainment since… ever? It may turn out to be the only way to pull off an Avengers movie without having to half-ass the special effects. Think about it, and in the meantime, what do you think of the buyout? Do you think Iron Man’s going to end up Disneyified?

You’ve read the reports, you’ve seen the pictures, and some lucky few of you were actually there to witness it, but we here at the site missed out on Comic-Con this year. Due to forces beyond our control we were unable to continue our annual tradition of sending writers from our site to the big industry shindig in San Diego, and it seems like it might have been one of the worst years to miss. That’s not going to stop us, at least belatedly, from rounding up all the juicy tidbits from this year’s show and providing our two cents on the upcoming 2009-2010 film season. Without further ado, lets get started…

Jonah Hex

The Jonah Hex panel at Comic-Con revealed multiple surprises. The first, that the film would be a violent and bloody affair (our money is on an R rating when all is said and done) and that the footage shown would reveal not one, but two Megan Fox sex scenes. In between the other news from around the Con, a tidbit regarding Oliver Stone’s new Wall Street movie was dropped citing Mr. Brolin himself as Javier Bardem’s replacement as the villain of the film. More on this as the story develops. The kickass new poster art can be viewed below:

Avatar

Yes everybody and their mother wanted to feast their eyes on James Cameron’s Pandora goodness at this year’s event (hell I would have considered flying out myself just to take it in) and out of the 25 odd minutes that were shown the consensus seems to be that the movie, while not as revolutionary as previously believed, will still manage to kick all kinds of ass. The surprise was that Cameron announced that August 21st will be unofficially christened “Avatar Day” as the studio plans to buy up all the Imax screen space they can to show 15 minutes of the film in Imax 3D…. FOR FREE!!!! That’s right, if you get your butt to almost any Imax screen in the country, you will be privy to a free 15 minute look at Cameron’s latest epic. How cool is that?

Oh yeah, and for those still wondering about the plot, here’s the official press release:

In the epic action adventure fantasy AVATAR, James Cameron, the director of Titanic, takes us to a spectacular new world beyond our imagination. On the distant moon Pandora, a reluctant hero embarks on a journey of redemption, discovery and unexpected love — as he leads a heroic battle to save a civilization.

The story’s protagonist, Jake Sully, is an ex-Marine who was wounded and paralyzed from the waist down in combat on Earth. In order to participate in the Avatar program, which will give him a healthy body, Jake agrees to travel to Pandora, a lush rainforest environment filled with incredible life forms – some beautiful, many terrifying. Pandora is also the home to the Na’vi, a humanoid race that lives at what we consider to be a primate level, but they are actually much more evolved than humans. Ten feet tall and blue skinned, the Na’vi live harmoniously within their unspoiled world. But as humans encroach on Pandora in search of valuable minerals, the Na’vi’s very existence is threatened – and their warrior abilities unleashed.

Jake has unwittingly been recruited to become part of this encroachment. Since humans are unable to breathe the air on Pandora, they have created genetically-bred human-Na’vi hybrids known as Avatars. The Avatars are living, breathing bodies in the real world, controlled by a human driver through a technology that links the driver’s mind to the Avatar body. On Pandora, through his Avatar body, Jake can be whole once again. Moreover, he falls in love with a young Na’vi woman, Neytiri, whose beauty is matched by her ferocity in battle.

As Jake slides deeper into becoming one of her clan, he finds himself caught between the military-industrial forces of Earth, and the Na’vi – forcing him to choose sides in an epic battle that will decide the fate of an entire world.

Conceived 14 years ago and over four years in the making, AVATAR breaks new ground in delivering a fully immersive, emotional story and reinvents the movie going experience.

Oh yeah, and check out the brand spanking new poster art that just hit the web:

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

Terry Gilliam is back. From all accounts the film rocks, Heath Ledger is marvelous, and the three actors who help Ledger to finish the role he started (Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, and Jude Law) each apparently kick all kinds of ass. Here are the latest pics and clips from the show.

Now, here’s the actual news from the panel. One Gary Oldman decided to drop this doozy of a scoop about Batman 3, “we start shooting early next year, you didn’t hear that from me.” Between when he left the stage and when the nearest reporter got him to elaborate on that explosive sound bite, Warnerbros. already had him back pedaling. David Goyer has also since released a statement saying that Nolan is “busy with Inception” and that any further film plans remain unconfirmed. Look for this story to continue to develop over the next few months as Inception gets closer to completion.

Tron Legacy

Besides a ridiculously cool Flynn Arcade presentation, the unveiling of the new cycle, and showing off the concept trailer from last year’s Comic-Con in 3D, the filmmakers behind Tron Legacy also debuted some new footage from the film that had Hall H roaring its approval. The concept footage has made its way online in good quality as a sort of teaser trailer for the flick, which can be seen below, and new reports reveal that Michael Sheen has been cast as the not-necessarily-human villain in the new film. Only time will tell.

2012

Roland Emmerich. End of the world. Again. Despite the audience fatigue surrounding disaster movies, one director has managed to produce the kind of visually destructive spectacle that was once reserved for the Statue of Liberty at the end of Planet of the Apes. Between Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow, the earth is never safe when Emmerich steps behind the lens, and if the footage at the Con was enough to get James Cameron to geek out about it in front of a reporter, you know this one’s going to be one hell of a ride. The new decidedly horrifying poster art is below.

Iron Man 2

You’ve probably heard all about this one already. They showed some crappy green screen behind the scenes footage, Robert Downey Jr. told them to grow a pair and give the audience some real stuff, and Jon Favreau obliged. Among the highlights, Scarlett Johanssen kicking the crap out of a load of goons, Mickey Rourke hurling his character’s trademark electrified whips through the air, and Rhodes getting the chance to try on War Machine’s armor for the first time. Some new pictures follow this post as a way of tiding you over until the trailer gets officially released some time this fall.

The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day

Not many people are choosing to report on this one which I think is sad as I just wrote a whole column wondering where the finished film is. Turns out it is coming out on November 1st, the panel at Comic-Con was an absolute blast, and the trailer which was supposed to premiere to the world yesterday is on its way out for national consumption. I will be sure to add the trailer below here when it finally premieres.

If it seems like there was a lot going on, that’s because there was. There were a lot more panels and events that I haven’t even had a chance to cover for you here, but hope you will learn more about them as the studious officially unveil their tentpole movies. Fingers crossed that next summer manages to be everything this summer could have been but wasn’t.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince finally arrives in theaters tonight at midnight after a seven-month delay, and fan excitement has reached a fever pitch. Being fans ourselves, we were geeking out over getting to attend the Half-Blood Prince New York City premiere.

It didn’t disappoint: we landed interviews with Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and director David Yates, plus Bonnie Wright (better known as Ginny) and Tom Felton (better known as Malfoy) — both of whom have much bigger roles this time around.

Check out the interviews below. (And see you tonight at 12:01!)

It’s been known for months now that the CW series, One Tree Hill will be returning for a seventh season without stars Chad Michael Murray and Hilarie Burton. Fans have been fighting it out back and forth on blogs and websites about whether or not the show will be able to survive the loss of their two lead characters. So up until now the show’s real future has been all speculation. We hate speculation so we went out and got you some facts!

We here at TheCinemaSource had an exclusive chat with the show’s real star, Sophia Bush about the shows finale last year and her ideas and hopes for the forth coming season. Ohh, and did we mention she dishes on the very first day of filming on the new season???

So find out what it was like back on set as the remaining cast of regulars and new comers like the heart breaking Lipstick Jungle alum Robert Buckley come together to reinvent this long lasting series!

We were able to talk to Bush at the premiere of her new independent film The Narrows, so also be sure to check out the first part of the interview, which also features her co-star Kevin Zegers:

Imagine my surprise when I woke up this morning and was greeted by a deluge of new Star Trek reviews, not from Sydney Australia, where the film officially premiered at the Sydney Opera House last night, but from Austin Texas where AintItCool’s screening of Wrath of Kahn turned into something far more interesting.

Apparently the night went something like this… After an introduction from Robert Orci, Alex Kurtzman, and David Lindelof for what they described as their all-time favorite Trek film, Star Trek II: Wrath of Kahn, fans settled in for the film. AintItCool organized the event as part of their annual FantasticFest screenings and people traveled from hundreds of miles away to see the classic film on the big screen with an all new picturesque transfer courtesy of Paramount. They were also to be privileged to ten exclusive minutes from the new film that had never been seen anywhere previously. After a few minutes of the beautiful opening titles, the Kahn print started to show lines and eventually appeared to break altogether. As the lights came back up a Paramount exec took the mike to tell everyone that he was heading back to the projection room to “kick somebody’s ass” and had the writers cover for him.

As the crowd booed and became more and more frustrated, the writers did their best to try and be entertaining. Fortunately for them, something else was soon to grab everyone’s attention. A figure in a trenchcoat and hat appeared on the stage with a baseball cap covering his face. In his hand he held a film canister, and as he whipped off the hat, Leonard Nimoy was revealed at the front of the room. Following the standing ovation, Nimoy asked Orci and Kurtzman how much of the film they had planned to show. When he heard the response, he turned to the audience and asked with a wry smile “Don’t you want to see the whole thing?” So began the world premiere of Star Trek a full three hours before the folks in Sydney would begin their own screening.

The reviews have been phenomenal, and that’s saying a lot considering the marketing team all but ensured an audience of entirely die-hard Trek fans. The fact that they even had the balls to pull a print of Wrath of Kahn, agreed to being the best of the series among most fans, to show the new movie is a testament to their confidence in what has been called the greatest franchise reboot ever made. If it was good enough to satisfy a guy who drove long distance to watch Kahn for the 11th time on a big screen, it’s good enough for me, and I couldn’t be more excited for the film.

In other news, Yahoo recently premiered a brand new clip from the film which is not only spoiler free, but highlights a performance we’ve now heard great things about but haven’t actually seen in action, that of Karl Urban as Dr. McCoy. He is channeling DeForest Kelly to such a degree in this quick clip that I already have complete confidence in what he’ll do with the rest of the film. You can check out our encode below:

Also, just for kicks, here’s the YouTube link to the footage of Nimoy’s arrival and reveal of the premiere that hit earlier today. If this doesn’t make you smile, I don’t know what will.

Hey everyone. As you all know, we recently updated our Videos section with a shwanky new player and a host of cool features like seperate playlists for different types of content and an overall faster and better quality interface. Over the past few days I’ve taken the liberty to upload a hefty selection of the latest and greatest trailers for all the movies we’re looking forward to and the quality is consistently high throughout. Now that we’ve gotten back up to speed on the content front, expect the future of the section to contain the most up to date trailer selection on the web. When it goes online, anywhere it goes online, we’ll have a copy for you right here at The Cinema Source for you’re viewing pleasure. Check back often for the latest footage from your most anticipated projects and look around at some of our other exclusive gems like Interviews, Clips, Panels, and more.

And, as something for the road, here’s your link to our newest trailer which premiered a few days ago on the Ellen Degeneres show… Spike Jonze’s Where the Wild Things Are:
