Amanda Seyfried
"A 'Mean Girl' No Longer..."
Amanda Seyfried is increasingly making a mark as one of Hollywood's great young female talents today. She made her film debut in 2005 as Karen Smith, a member of the evil Plastics in the hit Mean Girls.
A year later, Seyfried gained even greater fame as sullen, rebellious daughter Sarah Hendrickson on the hit HBO TV drama Big Love. The success of her on the series led to a string of roles in films like Alpha Dog, Jennifer's Body, and her most popular film, the adaptation of the Abba musical Mamma Mia! as bride-to-be Sophie Sheridan.
Now the 24 year old actress is making her way towards romantic drama in the film adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks novel Dear John. In the film, she plays Savannah Lynn Curtis, a college student who falls in love with a soldier, played by Channing Tatum, during her break. However, Amanda says she did not read the novel until after she did the film and with good reason on her end.
"Yeah, that book is not for me until the movie is over,"Â Seyfried says, "There is so much information in a novel. You can't included it all and especially with building a character in a movie, you have to make it a little more relatable or as relatable as possible. So I think in the book, she was more timid and strong-headed about certain aspects of her life, like religion, it wasn't included in the movie. But we still made her strong-willed about not drinking and not doing drugs and stuff like that, which is very admirable and a good role model for our audience, so we just made her more relatable, I think."Â

it for a while, but that book I can read in two days, because Nicholas Sparks is such a page-turner. I haven't read it yet. I will. I'm reading The Fountainhead right now. After 24 years, I finally picked up that book."ÂHowever, Seyfried says meeting Nicholas Sparks was a bit of an awkward experience.
"I went through a James Patterson phase,"Â she says, "I said I loved Suzanne's Diary To Nicholas and he's like, 'I didn't write that.' I was like, who wrote that? And he said it was James Patterson. I was like, 'Oh, yeah, he's really good. Oh, my God, so are you though. Shit! I can't believe I just said that! It's amazing.' And I told him I was telling people that and he's like, that's funny."Â
Amanda says one of her biggest concerns was toeing a fine line in her acting between drama and melodrama, especially from an author who's well-known for love stories that are often tragic and doomed romances.
"You don't want to manipulate the audience,"Â she believes, "I think it's a lot easier for me. My whole thing is subtlety and sometimes I'm too subtle and that's always a problem. I think I'd have a tough time on stage. But I didn't feel like I had to fight anything. I think Lasse was always pushing me to go further, because I'm afraid of melodrama. I don't want to manipulate anybody. I want to be more thoughtful and so is Lasse."Â
"That's his whole thing,"Â Seyfried continues, "He says, 'I want this to be groundbreaking. I want it to be real. I want it to be as genuine as possible.' And Chan and I were like yeah, we do too, so I think it wasn't that hard to stay away from the melodrama. I mean if we included all the stuff from the book and made the script more like a novel, I think it would have been hard, but the script is

so well-written and so, I shied away from all that stuff anyway. There were times when I almost had to go too far. And then I had just hoped that they wouldn't use that cut."ÂAmanda shared with us a particularly interesting fact about the film's Swedish director Lasse Hallström, who began his career directing Abba's music videos.
"Well, the first time you meet Lasse, he will give you his IPhone and there will be a video playing and then he will be like, he forgot,"Â she says of him.
As much as romantic films often get accused of being too "cheesy"Â, Seyfried says she did the film because of how much she believed in the romance in the story.
"I believed it,"Â she says, "I believed it in the script and it is to a lot of people a fairy tale to fall in love so instantly. But it makes sense because these two characters, and you can tell they are at a point in their lives where they're both not looking for anything. They are not looking for love. They have their careers. She's a student and he's a soldier and they're just on break and they just meet and they have nothing. They just have those commitments, but nothing to keep them holding back from diving into something they feel is real. It was that simple. That was a major part of it. For any young girl, you look at his face and you go, 'Ohhh! I'd like to know more about you!'"Â
"But I think it was just this grand gesture in the beginning,"Â Amanda continues, "It just gave her a sense of who he really is by just jumping in the water and grabbing her purse. I think that meant a lot to her and she hangs around with people that are kind of closed off. Clearly, he's a surfer, so he has a sense of adventure and I think because he went along with

her,"Â she continues, and she let him into her world so quickly, he went along so easily, I think that gave her enough insight to him. And yeah, he didn't talk a lot and it must have seemed like it was a bit frustrating, but the mystery on top of everything else was just to wheel her in. It's true, but I think it was just that first thing that he did and she was like, whoa, who are you?"ÂAmanda said that the romance aspect of the characters particularly hit her during the scene with the breakup letter.
"So much when he made that decision,"Â Seyfried says, "He was telling everybody at the party, 'Yeah, yeah, no, we're going to fight,' or whatever he says and she's like, 'We, really? You made a promise to me, son of a bitch.' You see how hard it is and frustrating it is for her to not have a choice to be so in love and to be forced into something that yeah, you do and you almost kind of understand, you feel so much for him, you feel so bad."Â
Seyfried shared with us what first made her so drawn to Savannah.
"She was strong,"Â Amanda says, "She knew she was. At 22, it's kind of rare, I think. I mean I certainly still don't know who I am. I think I kind of do, but for someone who grew up in a very affluent, structured life, I feel she is definitely very different from a lot of other people. I would assume she'd be. She's open-minded and she isn't judgmental and she's smart and she knows who she is and that's super-sexy and also she falls in love."Â

like, oh, God, I just want this for myself right now and give that to somebody else, like, I just want to be in love! Even if it's not real!"ÂWe asked Amanda what was the most challenging aspect of doing Dear John.
"The most challenging thing for me on this movie was enduring the dust storms on the beach,"Â she replies, "I know that sounds like a boring answer, but sometimes, I felt like I was in hell. Because it was in your eyes and it was cold and it was dry and you'd eat it and you wouldn't believe it, but, boy, that was difficult."Â
"Everything else was a piece of cake, I think,"Â Seyfried adds, "I mean, I got a little tipsy for the love scene in the barn because it was freezing and I was nervous and it was all so technical and Lasse wanted it to be so groundbreaking and I'm like, what does that mean? Then he's just like, 'More!' You wouldn't believe it. You should watch a love scene being made one day, you would have a really great time, because it's hysterical and there's nothing sexy about it, but they make it look quite sexy."Â
We asked Seyfried the last time she ever wrote or received a letter.
"Three years ago, in response to a letter from my ex-boyfriend,"Â she replies, "It was really romantic because I was overseas and he sent one to me. I found it a week ago. It was after Christmas break, I was in Pennsylvania and I found it. I was just like, oh, I have to just take this back with me. I've got to keep it forever. Because it is one of the most romantic things that's ever happened to me."Â
"It's so disconnected now,"Â Amanda continues, "It's so immediate. We're all obsessed with that, obviously, like, God, I can't get off of my 'crackberry', but it's clicking and some people don't even know how to

write in cursive anymore. Our technology is incredible and I guess it would be really hard to abandon that. It would be really hard to abandon that all of a sudden."ÂAmanda shared with us some of the film projects she has coming up, first of which being the romantic drama Letters To Juliet, but she says it has nothing to do with her love for the Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet.
"But I wasn't really looking for a movie like that, to fall in love,"Â Seyfried says, "Letters To Juliet is different. It is a straight-up romantic movie. It's not a comedy. They say it is a comedy, may end up being one, but yeah, there's a love story in there definitely, but it'd different, it comes more at the end."Â
"For me, for my character, it comes more at the end,"Â she continues, "The love story's more about this older woman wanting to find her lost love and that was the main reason I wanted to take the movie because Gary Winick was directing it and Vanessa Redgrave was going to fall in love with Franco Nero again. It's beautiful. It's a totally different story altogether."Â
The second film she mentions is the thriller Chloe.
"I also fall in love really hard,"Â Amanda says, describing the film, "It's so twisted that movie. But what a challenge, what a great role. I was so lucky to really own it and be able to create that. I'm going, he's a genius, but luckily, that movie's coming out between this romance and the next romance. So I've got February, then Chloe comes out in March, and then Letters [To Juliet] comes out in May, so thank God, at least I can show a ridiculously opposite world kind of character, I can play that."Â
One film Amanda says she's currently unsure about the status of is a film she was supposed to do on Oscar Wilde.

The whole thing just collapsed again, like it always does. I just think the script needs to come alive and maybe one day. People just keep getting too old to play the character, so it might just fall apart and I might not be able to play the character."Â
