Benjamin Bratt, best-known for being the ex of Julia Roberts, is a new man. Ever since his break up with America’s sweetheart, Ben has gained a new independence in his career. He is currently married to the beautiful Talisa Soto, and they have a baby daughter together. Benjamin Bratt has a new glow to his face along with a laid back attitude. Coming from a close-knit family consisting of five children, it is clear that marriage and fatherhood was what he needed to succeed personally and professionally. We spoke with Bratt about the joys of being a family man and his new role as Tom Lone in the highly anticipated Catwoman.
Bratt beams when he speaks of his wife and daughter. He tells us that, “fatherhood is the best thing ever.” And explains that in order to keep the family intact, they stay together no matter where they have to be (Talisa Soto is a working actress). Bratt says, “You have to prioritize and my number one priority is my family, especially my daughter. We have a pact if I get a job she (Soto) comes with me on location and vice versa. Since the birth of out daughter Sofia I did three films and this one was on location for a long time (3 months), so they came with me to Vancouver for the whole time.”
Bratt candidly discusses his hesitations for taking on the traditional role of his character Tom Lone: “Quite frankly when the script was first passed to me it made me pause because it was incredibly familiar territory. He was almost too good to be true. He was just a nice guy and there was something kind of wishy-washy about that from my perspective. We wanted to give him some edge and give him a bit more of emotional and physical form of ability.
As Benjamin Bratt is almost always the charming leading man in films, such as Miss Congeniality, he doesn’t get many opportunities to play the bad guy, or even someone slightly quirky. Bratt mentions that he has noticed this and explains the paradox of getting pigeon-holed into the guy that everyone wishes they could be: “Ever since I started acting, I always felt most comfortable in the characters that would go through a major transformation. With that being said, I’ve been often times cast as the leading man… and that’s fine because it’s work…” Bratt admits that he isn’t always the most confident guy off screen, finishing his sentence, saying, “but for me, it’s that kind of role that’s most difficult, because I have to play the dashing, charming guy, and I don’t consider myself that. For me, the joy and the real comfort is to hide behind the persona of someone who is so far removed from myself. That guy usually isn’t the most complex person, but if you’re offered a gig with Halle Berry and Sharon Stone you have to say yes to that.”
Bratt really enjoyed working with Halle and has nothing but kind and supportive words for her. He explains that chemistry is important in a film and the chemistry one may see on screen is often strongest when it’s based on actual like and respect for your co-stars. However, it isn’t always the case that you are going to like your co-star, as Bratt points out: “I’ve been in scenarios as an actor where you have to manufacture an emotion that’s not really there, but it wasn’t hard with Halle because she’s a great person and very beautiful, so it ain’t a tough job at the end of the day.” Even though the job was so easy with Halle, it isn’t
Bratt tells us his theory on the popularity of superhero films. Surprisingly, it’s different than you might think, as Bratt goes on to say, “I don’t think there are too many superhero fans. I think the reason why they are so popular is because it’s kind of ideal escapist fare. On the one hand she’s (Berry) quiet Patience Phillips and on the other she is the woman who is fully aware of all her feminine powers. But we all kind of wish it was ourselves. That and the visual effects. It takes us on a journey and that’s what everyone wants”.
The fun of working on a superhero film is the ability to revert to childhood. Bratt has an eloquent way in which he explains the connection between childhood and acting: “The best actors are in touch with the child within, because the nature of what you do is professional play. It’s make believe and most of the time the stakes are incredibly high. I’m very much in touch with kid inside myself.”

Never seen any other movies with him in it– (oh yeah “Texas”) but I will venture out to watch all movies with him in it. Glad to hear he is a family man. I love him as a character, and now –after reading this– I admire him as a person.
I hope to meet him in person one day.
p.s. He is the only man my mom ‘who is 77 years old’ has ever said was handsome!
