"It Happened Again..."
In 2009, The Hangover became the most successful R-rated Hollywood comedy ever, propelling the film’s biggest star, Bradley Cooper, into an incredible wave of success in Hollywood. He’s scored subsequent success in films like Valentine’s Day, The A-Team, and Limitless. Now the 36 year-old returns to the Wolfpack for another round (and another bender) as Phil Wenneck in The Hangover Part II.
Cooper talked about the most challenging experience of doing the sequel.
“Well, I think unfortunately for Ed [Helms, it was the food. That lasted throughout the movie,” Bradley remarks, “You know what was odd, was challenging, I thought, was the sheer number of people that were constantly on the set.”
“There's something about doing a production in Bangkok where there's just tons of people all over the place,” he continues, “And [director] Todd [Phillips], to his credit, thank God, likes a lean set, and that just makes it easier to work. So that was a challenge, having to adapt to just being so many bodies around all the time.”
This time around, Phil and the rest of the Wolfpack travels to Bangkok, Thailand for Stu’s (Ed Helms) wedding, but, of course, they once again are in a race against time, this time to find Stu’s missing future brother-in-law, after having an alcoholic-fueled bender. One of their stranger encounters this time around is a drug-mule, who’s played by a trained monkey named Crystal. Bradley talks about the experience of working with her.
“Crystal turned out to be just this miracle monkey,” he says of her, “She’s incredible. She can do anything. I remember talking about it and Todd was saying that there’s going to be this drug-dealing mule that’s a monkey, it’s going to smoke, and I’m like, how the hell are you going to pull this off?”
”One of my favorite scenes in the movie is this Curtis Mayfield “Pusherman” montage, it’s just one of the greatest parts of the movie,” Cooper adds, “The only downside to Crystal is

she has these long claws and you don’t want to get Crystal around an elephant. And there was one scene when we were walking down the street and there’s an elephant and she sort of destroyed my shoulder, which was not great.”One of the highlights of the first film for its many fans was a cameo by boxing legend Mike Tyson. Cooper discussed Tyson returning to the fold the second time around.
“Mike was amazing,” he says of him, “It was great to see him. First of all, he looked fantastic. He lost about 50 lbs and he was in great spirits. And the beautiful thing about him, and he promoted the first one, so we really got to spend a lot of time with him actually, not just the shooting of the first Hangover, so we all got to know him.”
“And my memory of Mike is before his day of shooting in Krabi, which is a resort town, you’d see him walking around, looked like he was prepping for a fight,” Bradley adds, “He had his headphones on and his robe and he took it so seriously. And it was also great to have him in the last scene, when we’re looking at all the photographs.”
It was mentioned to Bradley that there seemed to be no limit to the amount of sheer raunchy stuff to be expected from The Hangover Part II considering it’s set in the exotic locale of Bangkok, despite the film’s R-rating.
“Obviously, if you see the movie,” Cooper replies.
Cooper shared recommended spots to visit in Thailand.
“We spent Christmas in Chiang Mai, which was incredible, but for me, I fell in love with Bangkok,” Bradley remembers, “We spent two weeks in a resort town and for me, I couldn’t wait to get back to Bangkok. I actually took a liking to Top Menu, which is a Chinese restaurant that I ate in a lot in Bangkok. It was right across from the Starbucks.”

was asked about how impressed he was with the women of Thailand.“The people in Bangkok in general are beautiful, men and women, it’s just such a beautiful aesthetic and incredible,” Cooper says, “And certainly, the women are gorgeous over there. And it’s certainly not just the aesthetic of them, there’s something about the spirit of the people there. They call it ‘the land of a thousand smiles’ and there’s certainly a reason for that.”
“There’s an openness and a gentility, so in other words, it’s very infectious,” he continues, “There’s something about the energy of the women and the people there that is infectious and you want to be around. And certainly, that’s one of the reasons I fell in love with Bangkok and would go back in a heartbeat.”
Cooper says that what sets apart this sequel from so many others is because the first film had a mystery element to the plot, there was more character development in the second film.
“There was so much room for the second one, because there was so much unfinished,” he explains, “You really didn’t get to know the characters. The narrative, which is this ticking clock, took precedent over the first one, and the difference between this one and the second one is this movie is more about the dynamic of the three guys. You really get to know them. For example, for me, watching the first one, it can almost be boiled down to one joke, the whole movie is the setup and the punchline is the credits.”
“In this movie, I’m excited to see the credits, but that’s not what I’m thinking about the whole movie,” Bradley continues, “I got very caught up in what happened to Stu and how they dealt with that dynamic and what Alan did and it’s much more about that, which I found, to me, to be a much more pleasing movie, as a viewer. to do that because the movie breathes more. There’s more room for it, just in terms of the timing of the cuts than the first one, it just has a different musicality to it with this movie.”
