Chris Hemsworth

While doing big budget tent-pole franchises like comic book superhero films may be a double-edged sword for most actors, for unknown actors, it could be a lucrative road to overnight success.
That’s what hopes to be the case for Australian actor Chris Hemsworth. He is mostly best known for his home country’s soap opera Home And Away, while subsequently scoring small roles in films like Star Trek, A Perfect Getaway, and Ca$h. Now the 27 year-old scores a coveted lead role as the title character in one of the most highly-anticipated films of the year with the film version of the Marvel comic Thor.
After having previously interviewed Hemsworth at San Diego’s Comic-Con back in July of last year, we recently caught up with the actor who shared us his thoughts on how he felt to, first off, finally finish shooting the film.
“It’s a big relief,” Chris says of it, “And especially since we’re getting some great reviews in the papers and the way people seem to be enjoying it. Back when we were at Comic-Con, we had no idea. We just thought it was a jolly good film and we hadn’t seen it yet and hadn’t had any feedback, so on the one hand, we feel more relaxed about it.”
One of the big gambles of doing a film based on comic books is making sure it gets by the scrutiny of the die-hard fans of the original. And according to Chris, the feedback from the fans has been positive.
“A lot of the fans have said it was terrifically good, that it hit all the right notes, what they are looking for, but also, the feedback from a lot of the women, which I didn’t expect,” Hemsworth says, “They said, ‘I don’t usually enjoy these types of films, but loved it,’ and it was just, I think, across the board, a really enjoyable story, as opposed to just a comic book film or an action film. has the elements of humor and romance.”We asked Hemsworth if female fans being particularly into this superhero film had anything to do with a scene where Thor is shirtless.
“That’s funny,” Chris laughs, “Thank you.”
Chris shared how excited he was when he landed the role of Thor.
“Oh, incredibly excited,” he enthuses, “And at this point, I was excited to be working at all and I kind of fell into this perfect scenario of a wonderful director and the actors in this type of big franchise and this great character. So across the board, I couldn’t have been happier.”
Hemsworth shared how he first reacted to the final cut of the film with all the visual effects put in place.
“Oh, it was great because you do your bit and all of a sudden, it comes together and the special effects and all the other performances which I wasn’t part of and everything elevates,” Chris says, “Your bit doesn’t become just about you.”
“There’s a whole film there and story that people found very fascinating and interesting,” he adds, “I really did enjoy it. Often, it’s pretty difficult to watch yourself onscreen and where they really got swept away, the audience.”
Chris will already be back for another go as Thor in the all-star Marvel superhero film The Avengers, which joins the hero with Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk and Captain America, whose own film comes out this summer on July 22. He talks about being part of the all-star cast, which includes Robert Downey, Jr., Mark Ruffalo, and Chris Evans.
“I guess on one hand, there’s less pressure because you’re not carrying all the weight and it’s a big group of us,” Hemsworth says of the film, “But it’s just as exciting because there’s not a group of actors I admire as hugely and I really look forward to getting on set with. The filming has started. I start a week after.”

on between him and Captain America star Chris Evans.“We haven’t at all,” Chris says, “We hadn’t really spent that much time together.”
We replied that we were sure Hemsworth would feel Evans couldn’t lift an 80 lb. weight.
“He can’t lift that,” he says, laughing, “No, I think we’re more concerned about…we’re doing the workout, but more on the acting side of things.”
We asked Hemsworth if he got to do any of his own stunts for Thor.
“I do, yeah,” Chris answers, “It was great. We have to sort of invent a fighting style alongside this fairly unorthodox weapon and it began like an extent of your body with boxing techniques that influenced it. We wanted it to be to have brutality and power to it and it would be great having a team of stunt guys who said, ‘Yep, swing the thing and be yourself and it would be all OK.’”
We also asked if there were any stunts that Chris tried to get the filmmakers to let him do himself, but was told it was too dangerous.
“Not really,” Hemsworth replies, “They wanted me to do most of it. I was certainly willing, but, also, I don’t wear a mask, so it’s kind of harder to have some help into it. And to me, that’s the fun stuff. I’m trying to think of the most dangerous thing, but, I mean, a lot of the shield things to get Getty’s hammer back, that was pretty unchoreographed. We sort of loosely rehearsed it, but it’s kind of on the fly and there was spontaneity to it and it got kind of dirty, like a few sort of actual punches landed and various scrapes and bumps.”
Finally, Hemsworth shared with us his funniest recollection in his interaction with Thor fans in the lead-up to the film’s release.
“The funniest actually was a little kid recently who was telling me about Thor, he knew more Thor than I did,” Chris says, “He watched all

the cartoons and read the comic books. And I had said something and he corrected me on it and I was like, ‘Wow, this is a dangerous thing, too.’ (Laughing). That’s big shoes to fill that I walked into, that I got a six year-old who knows more about it than me. I’d never win that contest.”
