Drew Roy

"A Rising Star Amidst the Falling Skies"

Drew Roy is best known as a TV staple on teen series like iCarly and Hannah Montana, as well as ABC Family’s Lincoln Heights. He also appeared in the film Secretariat.

Now the 26 year-old comes back to TV for the second season of the TNT science fiction drama Falling Skies. In the series, which tells the story of a group of survivors banding together to fight back against alien invaders on Earth, Roy plays Hal Mason, the oldest son of Tom Mason, played by Noah Wyle. The actor talks about working with Wyle.

“He sets a good bar,” Drew says, “He sets it really high and so, for everybody else below him, it makes us all rise to the occasion. And on top of that, it’s not like he’s a slave driver who’s making us do a great job. We do, but at the same time, there’s an ease about him, a relaxed nature, and I know I’m speaking for many people saying he does a really nice job.”

Drew talks about the ever-evolving relationship between Hal and Tom on the series.

“I feel that when he doesn’t come back after three months, Hal just assumes that as the oldest brother,” Roy explains, “He’s got to step up into this paternal figure and make sense to him, but the difficult part of it is that Ben is becoming a man of his own and there’s a bit of a struggle there of listening to the advice I have to give and causes some friction.”

“And it’s unfortunate for Hal that Ben is now stronger and more capable as a fighter, so he’s able to make his impression upon everyone,” he continues, “But also, there’s also like a physical brother confrontation. I find myself on the ground in front of my girl because I think I can still push him around like I used to and that’s no longer the case.”

Roy was asked if he felt any pressure to

Drew Roy

keep Falling Skies’ ever-intriguing episode plots top secret.

“No, I’m good,” Drew replies coolly.

In the past season, Hal is known to be quite the womanizer. Drew talks about how the second season evolves Hal’s relationships with women.

“Last season it was a lot like The Bachelor playing Hal, getting girls every other week, so I enjoyed having the time to focus a relationship on one single person, which turns out to be the Maggie character,” Roy reveals, “We’ve been out on these missions together and we’ve definitely grown to having this very strong friendship. It’s not till we start seeing the other person looking death in the eye that we’re thinking, wow, if we lost the other person, that would really mean something.”

“Then, we’d kind of start trying to figure out what does that mean,” he adds, “And about the time things start kind of looking one way, something will happen and break us apart and kind of get together again and maybe not. We have to decide if this is even good for us. Is this going to make us distracted? Is this going to be a constructive relationship or is this going to bring us together and actually empower us to being better at what we do by having this bond together.”
