Prior to his success in the hugely successful comedy The Hangover in 2009, Ed Helms was a field reporter for Comedy Central’s The Daily Show With Jon Stewart, Andy Bernard on NBC’s American version of the sitcom The Office. He also did small roles in films like Evan Almighty, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, and Meet Dave. Now
Now the 37 year-old returns to the fold known as the Wolfpack as Dr. Stu Price once again in the sequel The Hangover Part II. Helms talked about the most challenging aspect of doing the sequel.
“I had a very serious hurdle to get past the first week, which was severe food poisoning,” Ed reveals, “It never fully went away. Maybe I should just leave the rest up to your imagination. Let’s just say my body exploded.”
This time around, the Wolfpack travels to Bangkok, Thailand for Stu’s wedding, but, of course, they once again are in a race against time, this time to find Stu’s missing future brother-in-law, after having an alcoholic-fueled bender. One of their stranger encounters this time around is a drug-mule, who’s played by a trained monkey named Crystal. Ed talks about the experience of working with her.
“My favorite part about Crystal is her trainer is this guy named Tom, who’s a sweet guy,” he remembers, “But whenever he needed Crystal to do something, he would literally just say, ‘Crystal, jump up on the table, jump up on the table, jump up on the table, jump up on the table.’”
“And then, Crystal would do it,” Helms adds, “And somehow, I don’t know if Crystal understands English or she’s sort of able to read the energy based on what he’s saying, but I just find it so hilarious that her trainer would just repeat an English command over and over and over again, until her soul eventually did what she needed to do.”

the film, considering it’s set in the exotic locale of Bangkok, Thailand..“We put things in because they are too raunchy,” Ed claims.
Ed shared his favorite restaurant he went to in Thailand.
“Definitely check out Top Menu,” Helms mentions, “There was one right across from the Starbucks. It’s just like any Chinese take-out place in New York City.”
Helms was asked about how impressed he was with the women of Thailand.
“I’ve been dedicated to the same woman for a number of years and I don’t look at other women,” Ed answers, “And it’s a beautiful country and a beautiful culture and fabulous, all the people.”
Ed says that what sets apart this sequel from so many others is because the first film had a mystery element to the plot, there was more character development in the second film.
“I think the first movie was defining those characters and discovering them ourselves and they were really kind of more an archetype,” he believes, “They were more just conventional archetypes in a way that we just added our own accents and inflections to. When it came time for the second movie, it was very exciting because we were able to add dimension to these characters in a way, because we had already done the homework.”
“You knew who they were,” Helms continues, “You knew what the relationships were, and Craig [Mazin] and Todd [Phillips] and Scot [Armstrong] gave us a lot of fun stuff that fleshes these guys out. It’s just more layers on these guys that it’s fun to explore, it’s just like layers peeling back, it’s a lot of fun.”
Director Todd Phillips has revealed that should Part II be successful, he already has plans to write and direct a third film that will close the trilogy. When asked about the possibility about the franchise expanding into new characters like the American Pie series, Helms commented on that possible notion.
“We’re just like the kids in the Vacation movies,” Ed jokes.

and buzz surrounding The Hangover Part II’s release, there were controversies revealed to the media. One was a cameo from troubled actor Mel Gibson that had to be scrapped in the wake of a domestic abuse scandal involving Gibson and then-girlfriend, Russian singer-songwriter Oksana Grigorieva and another was a tattoo artist suing the film’s producers over a trademark dispute involving Stu’s character sporting the facial tattoo originally designed for Mike Tyson, who returns for another cameo. Ed had this to say on whether or not any the controversies affect the surprise aspect of the sequel’s comedy.“I think there are abundant surprises in this movie and it’s sort of fun to hear about a nugget here or there and see where it fits in this movie,” Helms believes, “I feel like this is always a conversation when promoting comedies, how many jokes do you put in the trailer? And I don’t think it really matters, because when you’re in the movie, it’s a whole different presentation of that same information.”
