Fantastic Four
These days everybody's getting a film based on their comic book counterpart. With an utter failure of an initial film release over a decade ago, it's definitely long overdue that the Fantastic Four, Marvel’s longest running comic book series, received motion picture treatment that would do them justice. Marvel's first family hits the theatres courtesy of Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Michael Chiklis, and Chris Evans bring Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, the Thing, and the Human Torch to life in the 2005 version of the Fantastic Four, directed by Tim Story.
Unless you've lived under a huge rock for the passed 30 or so years, you've undoubtedly heard of the Fantastic Four; aside from comic books, where they're most known, they have also been produced in various other mediums "” a hit cartoon, action figures, and many more. Unlike the X-Men who receive their powers via mutation, but quite similar to non-mutant heroes such as Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four gain their powers from an accident "” theirs being the result of cosmic rays they're hit with on a mission in outer space. Unlike other superheroes such as the X-Men or Spider-Man, though, the Fantastic Four's identities are public, adding to the grueling daily grind of fighting evil world-wide.
As an avid comic book collector, the Fantastic Four has to be one of the main titles that make up the majority of my collection. What makes this book so special that it's still the longest running series in Marvel history, you ask "” the answer is very simple. Above all else, the Fantastic Four are human. They were human before they got their powers, and getting them didn't change that; though, in the Human Torch's case, it did cause his head to swell "” not an effect of the cosmic rays, I might add. And even more unlike the aforementioned heroes, the Fantastic Four even go to great lengths to try and reverse what has happened to them; especially the Thing whose physical appearance was most changed out of the four. Like a true family, the four go through trials and tribulations, good times and bad times, all the while 100% dedicated to the purpose of vanquishing evil.
So how does the 2005 version fare against the immense expectations by the F4's fans "” pretty well! Though I had some trouble seeing Alba has the Invisible Woman (she simply has too many film credits to her name to truly encapsulate a comic character, which works best when played by someone without as much screen recognition) The rest of the group "” Gruffudd, Chiklis, and Evans, truly become their comic book counterparts. And with every great action flick, especially one based on a comic, you need your villain. Julian McMahon is truly fierce as the psychotic genius known to comic book fans world-wise as Dr. Doom. Though the change in the re-telling of Doom's origin to better fit in with the F4's bothered me at first, this is quickly forgotten as we see on-screen, for the first time, a Dr. Doom who encapsulates all the anger, all the resentment and jealousy – that we've known and grown to love to hate in the comics.
The only other real pet peeve of mine about this film is the lack of time dedicated to the actual battles between Doom and the Fantastic Four. We see throughout the majority of the film Doom dividing a conquering among each of the four individually. It's not until the film's climax that we finally see them unite as a team to fight Doom, in which they hope will be their first and last team encounter with the metallic-masked villain "” though if the comics are any indication, you can't keep a good metal-faced Latvian down.
As compared to Marvel's various other comic-to-film adaptations, Fantastic Four holds its own quite well. The various effects used to recreate the Fours incredible powers for a live movie, i.e. CGI and prosthetics, accomplished what simple was not possible in the Roger Corman version over a decade ago. The effects of invisibility was perfected in film years ago, the authenticity of the Human Torch's flames are never questionable, having a live actor in a prosthetic suit playing the Thing was definitely the way to go (unlike the Hulk), and CGI is definitely getting better, which can be seen courtesy of Mr. Fantastic's stretching ability; not only until Fantastic's hands and arms are in a close-up onscreen can you see that the effects are computer-generated.
Rob's Recommendation: If you're looking to see a hardcore action flick based on a comic book, invest in a ticket to see Batman Begins. If, however, you want to see a pretty cool comic-to-screen adaptation with just enough action, and definitely the most laughs had to be had out of any comic film to date, the Fantastic Fouris the movie to see. It's an enjoyable pop-corn flick which will be enjoyable to see, but not a necessity to see in the theatres; plus, if the past is any indication, the Fantastic Four is going to receive some pretty awesome DVD extras treatment, which may be worth putting your ticket money towards.
