You're probably wondering, 'What is Spike Lee doing directing a bank heist/hostage flick?' Could the uncompromising urban artisan be abandoning his roots for big studio popcorn flicks, just because they still let him have Denzel? Is the aging director, nearing the big 5-0, looking to shore up some Hollywood cred and become a complacent Inside Man himself? Are we seeing a new side of Spike? Hardly. That's not to say Lee says nothing new in his take on an unfamiliar genre, but he
is right at home with familiar yet ever pertinent themes that seem content to exist on the film's thematic periphery until they are thrust to center stage near its midpoint. So pay attention "” there is a puzzle to be pieced together in Inside Man, but it has little to do with a bank heist.
Before the first ten minutes of the film expire, the bank robbery "” led by the quiet and determined Dalton Russell (Clive Owen, who will spend most of the film behind a mask and sunglasses), "” is in full swing. If this initial event takes place rather quickly, Lee seems content to take his time positioning the rest of his chess pieces before he allows the action to proceed. Across town somewhere, Detective Keith Frazier (Denzel Washington) and his partner Bill Mitchell (Chiwetel Ejiofor) receive word that the bank has been seized and that they are assigned to the case since the man who would normally go is on vacation. Frazier and Mitchell don't seem too excited or particularly scared, declaring, "Bad guys here we come,"Â as they gather their things and hastily walk out the office.
Back at the crime scene, police arrive in droves, strategically placing cars and men, setting up a perimeter, discouraging the guaranteed New York City onlookers from coming too close. This scene plays out in varying degrees of urgency, but it is decidedly methodical. Based on the way the camera moves and the patience by which Lee allows the scene to unfold, the viewer cannot help but notice of the parallel scenes playing out, one in which the actors in the film take several minutes to set the stage for the spectacle of the modern bank robbery, while Lee and his camera crew set up to document this fictitious scenario. You almost expect to see the film crew rigging up their equipment. Hence, the stage is set. Almost.
Elsewhere, bank board chairman Arthur Case (Christopher Plummer) has been informed that one of his banks has been taken over, 20 Exchange Place to be precise. When Case asks his assistant
As Lee makes quite clear (starting early in the film) by jumping ahead in time to Frazier and Mitchell exasperatingly questioning various hostages in the aftermath of the heist, the robbers not only got away with the crime, they apparently got away without leaving so much as a trace of how they did it or where they were headed. The detectives, it seems, have zero leads, and aren't too happy about it. But while here Lee might set the viewer up to think the film is about figuring out how the robbers got away, Inside Man really an exploration of why they decided to storm the bank in the first place.
Halfway through the movie, Lee turns the film's thematic landscape upside down, forcing the viewer to re-evaluate what has come before in light of new revelations, and consider that what seemed like Spike simply capturing an authentic New York atmosphere through sharp dialogue and comical exchanges might be crucial to his actual project, a close-to-the-bone yet not heavy-handed social critique. In light of the film's evolving purpose, the viewer is forced to decide what's at the heart of Lee's story, and what's on the periphery. Those who continue to believe that the film is a bank heist genre film will be sorely disappointed with the film's outcome, and more generally with Lee's handling of the genre, which is definitely on the weak side.
Those with a more open mind might find Spike doing what he does best "” illuminating the prejudices and misunderstandings we take for granted but never banging them over our head. Lee's story about racism, cultural insensitivity, brutality, moral corruption and compromise is told not through the lens of a bank heist, but in its shadow, in its backdrop, at least before he makes his intentions clear. Retracing your steps, you'll see what he was up to. There's the Sikh hostage who's called an Arab, roughed up by the police and
Lee clearly didn't come out to make a heist flick, but once stripped away, it's not as if you're left with a hollow message film. It is true that the ending could have been handled better since it is meant to satisfy the caper genre fans in all of us, and that given the film's twists and turns, you might wonder if all of Lee's moves were necessary. You might wonder if the dialogue was quite up to snuff, if the jokes were all worth mentioning, and if the film's blatant and pompous score was a necessary conceit. This film will definitely get you thinking, as long as you don't get bogged down in all the details. Inside Man runs a solid 2:10. Stick with it. And when you're finished, go see it again and think about what Spike's really up to.
