Role Models
Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott are two comedy veterans and overall likeable guys who never quite got their shot at headlining a hit movie. Consider Role Models their shot. Mixing Scott's happy-go-lucky ladies man vibe with Rudd's dry, cynical wit proves a perfect combination in this film about brotherly love and self-acceptance. Director David Wain knows a thing or two about directing ensemble comedies, having directed The Ten (random humor at its best) and Wet Hot American Summer. And Rudd, who co-starred in both of those films, co-wrote Role Models' smart and funny script.
I'll be honest, Rudd is the main draw here. As an actor, he's a good-looking charmer, but you never get the sense that he thinks he's good-looking or charming. He downplays a lot, which may explain why he has always been on the cusp of real fame. But that's why I like him so much. He's always accessible in his everyman roles, even when he's playing an ass"”like in Role Models.
Rudd plays Danny, a miserable guy who generally hates life"”and most people. He has been giving "Just Say No to Drugs"Â pep talks at high schools on behalf of Minotaur energy drinks for the past 10 years and is just about at his breaking point. Scott plays Wheeler, who works alongside Rudd as the Minotaur mascot and is basically his polar opposite when it comes to his outlook on life. Nothing fazes him. He likes his job, he likes the ladies and he likes the band Kiss. That's Wheeler in a nutshell.
Things really start to go downhill for Danny after a particularly irritating trip to Starbucks with his girlfriend Beth (Elizabeth Banks, in her third movie to come out in less than month. This gal keeps busy!). He rants about the sizes"”tall, grande and venti"”telling the barista, "Congratulations, you're stupid in three languages."Â That's the last straw for Beth, who's fed up with his bad attitude, and she dumps him.
When Danny has a meltdown at one of their school talks and ends up damaging school property with their Minotaur mobile, Wheeler gets caught up in the mess and both end up facing jail time. With the help of Beth, who's a lawyer, they get the choice of spending 30 days in jail or becoming part of a Big Brother program called Sturdy Wings. Of course, they pick the latter"”though at first they can't decide what choice would have been worse.
Danny gets stuck with a nerdy teen named Augie (Christopher Mintz-Plasse, continuing to play characters in the same vein as McLovin' of Superbad) who freaks out his parents because he wears a cape and engages in a medieval role-play game
Wheeler gets paired with a 9-year-old potty-mouthed rebel named Ronnie (Bobb'e J. Thompson, whose sassiness runs a fine line between funny and obnoxious most of the time) who's never had a Big Brother that lasted more than a day. But after Wheeler survives a few slaps across the face and an incident where Ronnie tries to drive his car, he discovers the boy actually just wants someone he can count on. He starts to bond with Ronnie, talking to him about girls and music. Although, it did seem kind of wrong to see Wheeler teaching a 9-year-old kid about boobies and sex.
In addition to the unlikely "bromance"Â between Danny and Wheeler and their heatwarming relationships with their "little brothers,"Â Role Models is strengthened by hilarious supporting cast. Jane Lynch is at her psychotic best as the reformed coke whore turned Sturdy Wings founder. Ken Marino is a treat"”as always"”as Augie's disapproving stepdad. (Go out and rent The Ten just for him. He's the next actor that needs a starring role, immediately.)
Role Models is a movie you can look up to. It'll make you laugh a lot, and it'll also make you wonder why Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott aren't more famous.

Synopsis:
Danny and Wheeler are two salesmen who trash a company truck on an energy drink-fueled bender. Upon their arrest, the court gives them a choice: do hard time or spend 150 service hours with a mentorship program.
After one day with the kids, however, jail doesn’t look half bad. Surrounded by annoying do-gooders, Danny struggles with his every neurotic impulse to guide Augie through the trials of becoming a man. Unfortunately, the guy just dumped by his girlfriend has only sarcasm to offer a bashful 16-year-old obsessed with medieval role play. Meanwhile, charming Wheeler tries to trade in an addiction to partying and women to assist a fifth-grader named Ronnie in redirecting his foul-mouthed ways. It would probably help if Ronnie’s new mentor wasn’t an overgrown adolescent whose idea of quality time includes keggers in Venice Beach.
Once the center’s ex-con director gives them an ultimatum, Danny and Wheeler are forced to tailor their brand of immature wisdom to their charges. And if they can just make it through probation without getting thrown in jail, the world’s worst role models will prove that, sometimes, it takes a village idiot to raise a child.
