Speed Racer
I knew going into this film that I was either going to love it or hate it. The stills that I had seen show this very weird mix of live action, animation, CGI and green screen work that made it difficult to discern what exactly this world was made of or what it was supposed to look like. And also just the concept of taking this one trick wonder cartoon and turning it into a feature length film with major Hollywood talent seemed a bit off base. I mean, how do you possibly create an interesting enough story around all the car racing and special effects to hold an audiences attention for almost two full hours? Everything early on pointed to either obvious disaster or amazing come from behind triumph.
Now, after finally seeing the film I'm pleased to say it was the latter – an Amazing Triumph! This film is, to use a rather antiquated expression, from soup to nuts"¦ brilliant!
Growing up I was aware of the Speed Racer cartoon but my attention always fell more towards Voltron and Transformers than it did to the guy in the white car on the race track, so I never really paid close attention to it. So I've never actually sat through an entire episode of good old Speed; but after seeing this film that may change.
Speed Racer as a live action movie was completely true to the spirit of the original cartoon and unlike most remakes lately (the despicable Transformers for example), it has a real respect and understanding of the source material. It obviously took a staggering amount of imagination and thought to figure out a way to translate this onto the big screen, but c'mon that's why it's worthy of making Millions and Millions of Dollars!!! Too often writers and producers in Hollywood will say it's too hard to keep things true to the initial concept or that it just 'wouldn't translate well on screen so we changed it,' instead of working really hard to figure out a way to make it work! Thankfully rather than cop out behind excuses the creative team behind Speed Racer did it the right way and it really shows!
The most important thing in a movie like this, well in any movie really, is that there be a real story with true heart at the core of it. For so many big wigs in Hollywood these days story is last on their
The Racers are a very close knit family whose lives center around race car driving. The patriarch of the group is Pops Racer (John Goodman) he runs a small, but proud auto shop with the help of family friend and fix it man, Sparky (Kick Gurry) and happy homemaker Mom Racer (Susan Sarandon). The crown jewel of the company though is their eldest son Rex Racer (Scott Porter) one of the most gifted race car drivers ever to sit behind the wheel until dubious circumstances lead to him leaving the family and ultimately being killed in a no holds barred type of underground race called The Crucible. Once middle son Speed (Emile Hirsch) is old enough to fill his brothers shoes he most certainly does and once again the Racer Family is on everyone's minds in the racing community. This time, however, Speed is forced to choose between sticking it out as an independent or signing with racing powerhouse Royalton led by the sinister Mr. Royalton himself (Roger Allam).
When Speed turns down the offer and Royalton declares all out war on the Racers, it's up to them with the help of the lovely Trixie (Christina Ricci) and the mysterious Racer X (Matthew Fox) to find a way to fight back and restore racing to a pure sport that isn't all about the money!
I know, it sounds typical and schmaltzy when you break it down like that and with a lesser cast it might have appeared that way on film but I guarantee you it doesn't. The relationships that exist between these characters are all very real and very moving.
Emile Hirsch more than proved his acting chops in last years Into the Wild and previous to that in the amazing indie, The Mudge Boy, and even though at first glance Speed Racer is a very one dimensional guy, Hirsch manages to create a very layered very moving performance. His scenes opposite veteran 'dad' actor John Goodman and also opposite Lost star Matthew Fox make you forget about the fantastical nature of the setting that they are in and brings it right back down to the emotional nature of the situation.
Also there really isn't a better actress working today to play the role of supportive and loving mom than Susan Sarandon. Even if she doesn't have a great deal to play in a given scene all it takes is a quick cut to her reaction to what's going on and the scenes quality has been increased ten fold. She's always amazing.
The same can be said of Christina Ricci in her role as the 'always there for ya' supportive
All of that important emotional stuff out of the way, this film is a ton of fun! The racing sequences are brilliantly executed. It's impossible for me to imagine how someone (The Wachowskis) were able to see these scenes in their heads first, and then get them onto film. Storyboarding a simple movie is a crazy enough under taking as it is, this one is unbelievable! When you see this you'll be amazed at how brilliant this directing team had to be to dream all of this up!
The other elements that they were able to weave into this miraculous visual tapestry were taken straight from the cartoon itself. Anyone familiar with the style of animation back then will be able to pick out each scene that was clearly inspired by these signature moves and for those of us less familiar with it, it will seem like yet another great idea on the part of the filmmakers.
As I mentioned earlier they use a ton of different elements to bring this world to life; CGI, green screen, animation, almost every element you could think of and somehow it all blends together and creates the exact right environment for this story. They didn't stress over making it look 'real' it just had to look 'right.' That was something that I could not understand, again, until I saw the film.
So I guess the overall point behind my entire review here is that you should go see this film! Don't wait for DVD because the experience of seeing this on the big screen is way too good to pass up. It's exciting, fun and tells a really great story with an amazingly talented group of actors! What more could you ask for?
