The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
Like many kids, I read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe without reading the rest of C.S. Lewis‘s Chronicles of Narnia series. Well, I’m pretty sure I read The Magician’s Nephew, but I don’t remember it. Seven books were a big commitment when there were so many movies I could see instead.
I saw the movie adaptation of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe in 2005, though, and I loved it. I was flooded with nostalgia as I watched the four Pevensie children enter a new world through a wardrobe: I remembered the excitement I felt when they eluded the agents of the evil White Witch, and I remembered how terrifying I found the notion that she could forever turn anyone into stone.
Hearing that the next film would be Prince Caspian, I surprised myself by actually seeking it out and reading it. Narnia purists will note that while Caspian was the second book published, it’s actually chronologically the fourth "” but since it’s the only other volume in which all four Pevensie siblings appear, director Andrew Adamson had to hurry up and make the movie before his actors outgrew their roles.
For the first movie, Adamson and his team made a very straightforward adaptation that simply expanded the story to fit a full-length film. The good news this time around for Caspian is that in many ways, they actually improve on the source material, both structurally and thematically.
At the end of the first movie, the four Pevensie children become the kings and queens of Narnia and grow into adulthood "” before coming across the wardrobe again, going back through it, and coming out in the real world as kids again. That means in Caspian, which takes place one year later for them, they’re in a certain sense adults trapped in kids’ bodies. Lewis glosses over this in the novel, but Adamson explores it: how they would have a hard time adjusting from being royalty to being schoolchildren, and how they’d be desperate to return to the magical world they were able to stay in for so long.
Of course, they do return, only in Narnia time it’s been 1300 years: their old kingdom is now in ruins, and the only memories of them are whispered old tales and some cave art. (Imagine jumping a thousand years into the future and finding that you’ve become a legend. It’s just cool.) Narnia has now been overtaken by an imperialist Spanish race called Telmarines, who have
The rightful Telmarine heir to the throne is Prince Caspian (dashing newcomer Ben Barnes), but when his power-hungry uncle Miraz (Sergio Castellitto) orders his assassination, Caspian barely escapes into the forest. There, he discovers the creatures in hiding, and realizes he needs to lead them in a battle against the Telmarines in order to restore Narnia to the magical, peaceful place it used to be. For help, he blows a magical horn that’s supposed to call back the Narnia kings and queens of old, and the four Pevensies come tumbling back.
In the novel, all that back story is somewhat clumsily dumped in a few chapters after the Pevensies return. In the movie, it’s structured a lot more logically (and cinematically), starting with the Caspian assassination attempt before the title sequence, and then inter-cutting until the stories finally connect. When they do, one of the pleasures is that the Pevensie siblings aren’t wide-eyed young kids anymore; they’re seasoned veterans who, despite their appearance as mere children, immediately want to take charge. All four actors "” William Moseley as Peter, Anna Popplewell as Susan, Skandar Keynes as Edmund, and Georgie Henley as Lucy "” look markedly older (it’s been two and a half years since they filmed the last one), but have matured surprisingly gracefully, and their performances are smoother and more confident this time around.
The movie is being marketed as a darker, more action-packed sequel, and it’s true on the latter count "” the action here is much more ingrained in the story, and includes a thrilling stealth assault on the Telmarine castle at the midpoint. However, thematically speaking, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is actually the darker of the two stories. Caspian plays out much more like a straightforward medieval war movie "” a race of imperialist humans, greedy and vain as some of them may be, do not make for the otherworldly dread of the deceptively charming White Witch, basically the embodiment of evil. (She does make a brief cameo appearance here, still played by Tilda Swinton, and it’s a terrific scene.)
Still, the contrast between the two types of villains is refreshing in the sense that we’re really getting a totally different story here instead of just a retread of the first one. Of course, much of the credit for that in particular goes to C.S. Lewis.
The one major thing that felt like it could’ve been done better is the Aslan subplot, which just doesn’t make any sense. He’s not there, they can’t find him, but then Lucy goes and gets him. The reasons for his absence, and Lucy’s sudden ability to know exactly where he is, aren’t explained. Since Aslan’s basically God, it’s hinted that
That qualm aside, the movie is an oddly terrific collaboration between Lewis and Adamson, given that they will never meet. The basis for the story is totally thanks to Lewis, and the skilled Adamson has turned it into a richer and more cinematic treat. Even the battle scenes, the highlight of which is a swordfight between Peter and Miraz, are refreshing: instead of a series of quick close-up cuts, Adamson lets the camera hang back, and lets the choreography move at a slower pace, making it both more realistic and more coherent. These aren’t action heroes "” the swords are heavy, and nobody’s invincible. It’s an old-fashioned action-adventure, and I was thrilled by how much I enjoyed it.
