Movie Grade: C
What starts as a promising exploration of the relationship between estranged family members wrapped around a monster movie structure quickly spirals into a dull and unremarkable remake. The film tries valiantly to set up a masterful chess game of storytelling only to have the board wiped clean by an overly Gothic retread of a beloved
monster classic. To be fair, the film is nowhere near the atrocious level of Van Helsing, but it still falls short of the bar set by any other werewolf film of the past twenty years let alone the original Wolfman.
Benicio Del Toro as estranged son Lawrence Talbot gives an almost unbelievable performance in that the entire film the audience can’t believe what he is giving them through. Flat emotions and sometimes almost laughable delivery make for a very head scratching performance from an otherwise usually very talented actor. What was clearly an attempt at a deeply torn and damaged psyche (complete with a history
of mental illness and its subsequent horrendous treatment) is reduced to an overly edited mash up that pushes the audience away from the character rather than making them feel closer to him. Anthony Hopkins is vastly under utilized as emotionally barren patriarch Sir John Talbot, but does manage to find some character to wring out the part
by the end of the film.
The two standouts of the piece are Emily Blunt and Hugo Weaving.
Blunt as Gwen Conliffe manages to shine and expose layers of a fractured and conflicted woman. Weaving as determined Scotland Yard Officer Abberline, brings a sense of fun and charm to a bit part based on a fictionalization of an actual Scotland Yard officer.
One of writers David Self and Andrew Kevin Walker‘s more clever and
fascinating touches is to set the film in the late 1800′s. A time when the world was just getting over meeting one of its first serial killers, Jack the Ripper. Setting the film in this period marks an attempt to stand out, but again just results in standard Gothic candlelit shots and fog filled moors, which frankly is nothing we haven’t seen done better or before.
Granted, the makeup effects provided by the masterful Rick Baker are quite well done; when they aren’t being pushed out of the way by the ever abundant computer generated effects. Gone are the horrifying transformation sequences of old such as An American Werewolf in Paris or even the, brilliant for its time, effects of the original Wolfman. In their place is yet another werewolf transformation sequence that,
while interesting to watch, doesn’t produce the same visceral discomfort and almost
“reach-through-the-screen-and-make-you-feel-the-pain-of-it” moment as the previously mentioned werewolf films managed to do. Perhaps if the filmmakers had let Baker create a practical sequence for the transformation instead of the computerized version that then shifts to the brilliant makeup, the effect would
The film does try to make amends by providing the audience with plenty of scares, werewolf attack sequences and gore. While not as over the top in its use of blood as other R rated horror films, the film does manage to find just the right balance of the brutality and blood and guts spewing feel of an animal attack. A sequence where the Wolfman
manages to escape into the streets of London plays out quite well and is a shining example of one of the things the film does get right.
All in all this remake of a classic monster film is much like the main character it tries to present. A creature caught somewhere in the throes of transformational agony that cannot live with what it has become and also sadly cannot go back to what it was.
Perhaps when Hollywood attempts to remake the werewolf genre again, and lets face it they will, they would do well to keep the silver bullets a bit closer at hand to prevent such a monster from being released yet again…
