Sometimes, when the skies are cloudy and life's outlook seems bleak at best, the only thing to do is go to the movies. Preferably to a movie that doesn't bring up some serious issue, or cause your brain to hemorrhage as you take in the plot.
If you don't think too hard about it (as I will do, I warn you, later in this review), there's nothing simpler than You Got Served's standard movie story of Elgin ("E"Â) and David ("D"Â), played, respectively, by B2K's Omarion (a.k.a. Omari Grandberry) and Immature’s Marques Houston, and their dance-loving crew. The boys and their friends are the star attraction at a club run by one Mr. Rad (Steve Harvey), who holds dance battles on the boxing ring-like main floor of his club. One day, a group of rich kids, led by Wade (Christopher Jones), a dude with a laughable hairdo, challenge (via videotape "” to make the challenge more frightening because it's reminiscent of The Ring??) E and D and their boys to a dance-off. E and D readily accept, and fly on waxen Icarus wings towards the golden sun of dance battle victory "” yet a twist makes the battle turn out not quite as expected, let’s say. Long story short, D and E and their crew get served. Now, can they get back their dignity and reputation "” not to mention the $5,000 they put into the prize pot? Yet, even as we see these good, decent kids, who've even forbidden cursing for members of their ranks, the film shows us a different side. To make much-needed money, E. and D. deliver "packages"Â for Emerald, a super-scary druglord. Though this aspect of the boys' life does come into the plot, it's generally dealt with in a more or less matter-of-fact way. Even a fatal drive-by that leaves one character dead, is discussed like an everyday tragedy, and not given a lot of explanation.
So there are hardships to life in the hood, and the film doesn't shy away from them. But in spite of these hardships, another cliche that's nowhere to be found in You Got Served is a character/characters who is/are longing to get out of the hood. Even Liyah (Jennifer Freeman), D's sister and E's inexplicable (unless we're going on looks here) crush, who got accepted to Princeton but can't afford it, seems content to take classes at the local community college and work part-time.
All of these intriguing details are maybe more intriguing because the bad dialogue, hackneyed plot turns, ridiculous waste of Ludacris' Stand Up, and near-absent characterization (not to mention a gross under-use of Jacke’e Harry), make you wonder if these thought-provoking issues weren't included without much thought, or even, in some cases, by accident.
Yep, when you see it like that, You Got Served gives you something to think about. But let's be real here "” this flick's about the dancing. And holy crap, what dancing it is! The movie opens up with a raucous, all-out crazy dance battle, and doesn't let up until the end. The competition between the groups is as urgent, vital, passionate, and enraged, as the rap battles in 8 Mile, some of the moves are cooler and more unique than anything you might have seen in even the flyest video on MTV.
