In certain words, Downton Abbey has been called “sentimental”, “cliched” and “f***ing atrocious”. Sure the first season was more impressive from the second, but none of these criticisms have scathed the reputation of the popular ITV series which has been praised by TV critics, lauded at ceremonies and was watched by 9 million viewers at the start of its season. That’s to say nothing of the fans that watched from their laptops earlier this year. My lips are sealed.
This is all to say that the third season now has a trailer. It’s nothing great, in fact the maudlin characters look like they’re at the height of melodrama. Shirley McLaine, who is confirmed to play Cora’s mother wasn’t present. The sound design and canned titles are even want for a little attention from the Marketing team. But for all those that fell in love with Julian Fellow’s Edwardian costume pieces, the Gosford Park-like ensemble cast, and handsome, handsome Matthew Crawley, there’s nothing that can deter you. PBS brings it to American come January. Until then, you can always re-watch Brideshead.
