It was rumored that Emma Stone was going to be the next Mary Jane Watson. As it turns out, she's the next Gwen Stacy.
In a surprising turn of events, Stone decided to take the female lead, Stacy, rather than Mary Jane. As you probably know by now, Stacy is the love interest of Mr. Parker and his web-slinging alter-ego this time around, instead of the usual Mary Jane web of love.
Stone receieved some doubt in her ability to play the role, and there was some hope by those who enjoy her work that she would hold off on taking such a high profile and career defining role. Honestly, it doesn't really matter.
Stone is a fine actress, can carry a movie on her own (Easy A), and will fit in nicely with the new band of cast and crew for the Spider-Man reboot. And, if you haven't seen The Social Network, Andrew Garfield (the new Spider-man) is genius. Apparently the two had a lot of chemistry on set, which led to Stone choosing the part of the love interest.
It seems Spidy has snagged himself two killer young actors so far.
