The fact that I was initially fooled by this Fan Made UNofficial Trailer begs a very serious question… ‘Why did I believe so easily and so readily that this was in fact the real deal?’ And the answer is, ‘because it plays exactly the way I would expect the genuine article to.’ In fact, I’d wager that when the real McCoy is released it will be very similar to what we see below.
Let’s go back to the beginning; well, to the ‘new’ beginning to figure out why. It’s true that the reboot of one of the most iconic series in history, directed by J.J. Abrams in 2009, wasn’t nearly as bad as it could have been… from a true fans perspective. But it also wasn’t Star Trek.
Yes, that was the title and the character names were all the same too, but it wasn’t what people refer to as ‘canon.’ (Which is really just a kinder way of saying it’s meaningless, irrelevant filler in terms of the overall universe that was created over four decades ago.)
But because this version of it made a ton of money, by pleasing first and foremost audience members who had never seen nor ever cared about Star Trek, there’s now no way of stopping the studio machine from churning out at least two more fantastic action adventure films that have co-opted the name of Star Trek for branding purposes.
So what’s a Trekkie to do? We have no choice but to eagerly await these films and pray they don’t destroy our now 46 year old friend too egregiously.
And with that in mind comes this exceptionally well made fan trailer for the next installment of this ‘series.’ It literally shows us nothing and tells us even less. But because that’s what we would expect from a true ‘Teaser Trailer’ that just lends to its authenticity. This trailer relies on archived news footage and speeches to set the tone for the film as it builds up to one shot of Chris Pine as Captain Kirk. This method successfully connects a contemporary setting that is familiar to everyone to the world of Star Trek. Now, the reason that a die hard Trekkie like myself believed every second of it is because based on the last movie, making Star Trek as accessible as possible to the masses has become priority number one for the filmmakers.
I’m sure we all remember the first OFFICIAL Trailer for the reboot in ’09 that most people initially thought was a car commercial showing a young James T. Kirk behind the wheel. That caught the eye of a lot of non-Trek fans because it looked like the beginning of a cool modern movie. Then, in the later montage we get some glimpses of an epic battle in space being waged with rapid fire Star Wars style lasers circa Revenge of the Sith. No one watched this and thought here’s a Star Trek movie; which generally has an esoteric tone to it. Everyone thought this looks like a fun, sexy, and exciting movie which is completely and readily relatable to everyone. No one thought… ‘Wow! Star Trek is Back!’
As I mentioned earlier, I truly believe that when we do eventually see our first glimpse of what is sure to be a major blockbuster summer hit it will play very much like what we see below. If I’m wrong and the second movie turns out to be more true to the original vision of the franchise, and made with the fans in mind rather than the uninitiated popcorn eating throng, then I will be THRILLED to take all of this back. But I don’t see that happening.
In any event, I love the new actors that were brought in and of course I still love the characters that Gene Roddenberry originally created back in the 60′s, so until May 17, 2013 I’ll be crossing my fingers and hoping for the best. But, I won’t be surprised when Trek 2 is released and is hailed as a major popcorn success!
