It’s true that this is hardly breaking news as he first mentioned it in an interview back in 2010 but this type of article is so incredibly rare that it bears repeating.

So few men in our society, in Hollywood especially, are comfortable enough with their own sexuality to freely admit that they’ve had an interest in men and have fully explored that attraction physically. Whether at the end of the day they settle down with a woman or a man, the mere fact that they tried both speaks volumes about their character and strength as a man.

The gorgeous, and at times ferocious, actor Tom Hardy admits to being such a man in an interview with NOW Magazine.

When asked about having sex with men he replies, “Of course I have. I’m an actor for fuck’s sake. I’ve played with everything and everyone. I love the form and the physicality, but now that I’m in my thirties, it doesn’t do it for me. I’m done experimenting but there’s plenty of stuff in a relationship with another man, especially gay men, that I need in my life. A lot of gay men get my thing for shoes. I have definite feminine qualities and a lot of gay men are incredibly masculine. A lot of people say I seem masculine, but I don’t feel it. I feel intrinsically feminine. I’d love to be one of the boys but I always felt a bit on the outside. Maybe my masculine qualities come from overcompensating because I’m not one of the boys.”

He later went on to clarify (no doubt following advice from someone on his ‘team’) that he’s never actually had full on intercourse with another man, but that he had experimented with them.

It might be an American short coming that he doesn’t suffer from because of his British roots, but it is so refreshing to read something like this; especially at a time when there is so much at stake for LGBT Americans in this upcoming presidential election.

Not only are you an incredible acting talent Mr. Hardy you serve as a fantastic example to all people; I certainly hope all of those closeted Hollywood actors can learn to take a page from your book and help destroy these barriers and labels we’ve all become so obsessed with.

Since this statement was first made back in 2010 he has gone on to star in The Dark Knight Rises, Inception, Lawless, This Means War, Warrior and is currently filming Mad Max: Fury Road… all very meaty, very masculine tough guys roles… so clearly, it WON’T destroy your careers boys. (That is, assuming you’re actually a great actor to begin with.)

I say to everyone still hanging out with the umbrellas, the coats and the shoes, grow a pair and come on out of that closet! Most people will still love you, and the ones that don’t eventually will again.
