Sundance darling, Xavier Dolan, released an international trailer for his project Laurence, Anyways. And at the ripe age of twenty-four, Dolan has already directed and starred in two films, Heartbeats and How I Killed My Mother. In his first film, he confessed in a semi-autobiographical style, the struggle weaning off his mother’s neuroticism and finding love, only to be faced with his own self-obsessed romantic ideals. In Heartbeats, he returned to show the bond between fag and hag, who share a mutual love interest for an aloof and confused, curly-haired Adonis. Dolan has demonstrate a mastery of visual style, a love of euro-pop and great character dynamics in both these films with critical acclaim.

Laurence Anyways, as fate would have it, still does not have a US distributor. It’s really a shame. Some in Europe and in his homeland of Canada have said it’s his best yet, where the film came out earlier this month. Anyways tackles one man’s  decision to have a sex change and the complications it brings to his relationship with a woman. Again, Dolan appears in the title role with Suzanne Clement playing his girlfriend and Nathalie Baye as his mother. A timely topic like this must be seen, if not for its subject alone but because Dolan’s track record for handling  sensitive material with such even-handed grace.
