A Justice League movie has been thrown around multiple times by Warner Brothers for the past eight or so years. Multiple times. I know this because I’m pretty much obsessed with the Justice League.
I personally believe that Warner Brothers is really, really reluctant to make a movie with two female superheroes (Wonder Woman and Hawk Girl) and a black superhero, John Stewart; though if it does actually get made they’ll probably make Green Lantern a white dude anyway (even though Green Lantern has been depicted in comics and cartoons as a black man for over forty years). To be fair, a movie like this is bound to have an astronomical budget and demand a profit in the box office. If I were Warner Brothers, I’d do whatever I possibly could not to have a repeat of Superman Returns. Actually come to think of it, Superman Returns’ lackluster performance in the box office was probably a contributing factor as to why we haven’t seen a Justice League movie yet.
All of that aside, Warner Brothers is moving forward with the possibility of a Justice League movie and is looking to tack a director on the project. Since The Town performed well, it’s rumored that Ben Affleck may be pursued to direct. The Wachowski siblings, who created The Matrix trilogy, are also being considered to direct a Justice League flick after they impressed the studio with their new movie Cloud Atlas. Cloud Atlas is a sci-fi drama chock full of big names.
I saw The Avengers, which was a very cool movie (though I’ll admit publicly right now that I’m DC fo’ lyfe), but I imagine it was really hard to write so many characters into one movie and make it good.
Plus, we know that Christian Bale won’t reprise his role as Batman in a Justice League movie, which makes sense. After the success of Christopher Nolan’s Batman films, audiences wouldn’t want to see that particular Batman again as anything other than just Batman. Not to mention that Wonder Woman, Hawk Girl, Martian Manhunter, The Flash, and Aquaman don’t even have origin movies yet. (and they may never…)
Writer of the upcoming movie Gangster Squad (set for release in January of next year), Will Beall, has been handpicked by Warner Bros to write Justice League. Let’s hope he’s good at his job and is up to this monumental task!
