Based off the success of the ultra low-budget Paranormal Activity, Paramount Pictures has announced the start of a new branch of their company called Insurge. Insurge will give 10 new film makers $100K to make their movie and will hopefully get a theatrical release. Here is a blurb from the company:
"Aren’t you tired of being fed the same movies wrapped in different paper? We want to find and distribute crazy, unpredictable, and hopefully awesome movies – movies that make you want to line up to see at your local theater with all your friends (and us). Movies that a big studio would never release because they’re too risky, too silly, and they don’t star Sandra Bullock."
Another interesting aspect is they plan to create an online community that would help pick movies and vote on posters. The website (which is now down) calls it an "experiment" and we think it’s great. Although Paramount tries to bill this as them trying to deconstruct the Hollywood system we all know it’s really all about the money. Either way the important part is we are getting money to new filmmakers with fresh ideas.
Reading this news gets me excited. So often I am let down by the lack of originality in the mainstream. The plan Paramount has sounds so obvious and easy it’s surprising the bigger companies hadn’t tried to do this years ago. It’s great to know new opportunities are opening up for filmmakers and It will be fun to see what Insurge comes up with!
