A few days ago Chris Evans was offered the coveted role of Captain America in The First Avenger: Captain America. He beat out a list of potential casting choices and a studio testing process that included  Channing Tatum, Mike Vogel, Garrett Hedlund, John Krasinski, Michael Cassidy, Patrick Fluger, Scott Porter, Chace Crawford, and Wilson Bethel.

Well today arrived, and he has officially accepted the part. The contract would be for 4 feature roles including 3 Captain America movies and The Avengers along with cameo appearances in up to 5 more. At least he won’t be known as Johnny Storm for his whole superhero career.

The First Avenger: Captain America is being directed by Joe Johnston (the original man behind the much maligned Universal production The Wolfman) and already stars Hugo Weaving as the villain Red Skull.

Screen testing for his love interest, Peggy Carter, are Keira Knightley, Alice Eve, and Emily Blunt. The project has a July 22nd 2011 release date and will go into production this summer.
