The rush of exciting summer movies officially came to a close last weekend, which brings about a slow and calm ending to the month of August.

This weekend only two movies will receive wide releases; The Last Exorcism and Takers. Takers features an ensemble cast made up of Chris Brown (Rhianna’s violent boyfriend), Hayden Christensen, Matt Dillon, Idris Elba, T.I. (the rapper), and Paul Walker. The plot involves a bank robbery and the police, and seems like a pretty standard affair. With this much musical talent in front of the camera, it almost feels like the movie was made as a vehicle specifically catered to highlight these hit artists.

The Last Exorcism looks to be this year’s Blair Witch Project, and based on the positive word of mouth, should be very entertaining for those who enjoy a good scare at the theaters. The movie is shot in a documentary style, and focuses on a minister who is brought in to remove a demon from a possessed young girl. Things, of course, go horrible wrong. Like the Blair Witch Project, the movie tags its footage as “found footage”, allowing the viewers to believe or not believe in what they are watching.

In limited release is Neil Marshall’s latest masterpiece, Centurion. The director is responsible for the best movie no one watched, Doomsday, and he also directed one of the best horror movies of the last ten years, Descent. His Dog Soldiers is a bit of a cult classic, and Centurion looks to bridge Marshall’s incredible sense of style with Roman soldiers. Marshall fans certainly won’t be disappointed.
