Alice in Wonderland has been a juggernaut for the last two weeks. In a time where most movies are cast aside in Hollywood’s "dead zone" (January-March), Alice in Wonderland has blown away box office records for this quarter. The summer seems to have come early. But what does that do to films now? Well, the expectations are up, and so is the stress of level of producers.
Opening this week are three distinctly different films, The Bounty Hunter, Repo Men, and The Runaways; all with different goals and expectations.

The Bounty Hunter, starring Gerard Butler and Jennifer Aniston, has to be gunning for the top spot. With the star power of Butler and Aniston, along with a plot that seems to… at least "not suck", anything less than the top spot would seem to be a dissapointing first weekend. However, Alice in Wonderland’s dominance has the feel of Avatar’s mult-week stomping of the competition. The movie has been received well, and there could be more people out there ready to see what they have missed. I would assume The Bounty Hunter will take the top spot. Gerard Butler is too big of a star now. Even though he seems to be competing with Samuel L. Jackson for how many movies they can make in a year, he has the goods. Even with the recent flop of Gamer, coupled with the mediocre success of Law Abiding Citizen, Butler has proven he can work with quality female leads, like Katherine Heigl in The Ugly Truth. Now, I haven’t even mentioned Aniston yet. Placing the two together created a world of gossip about sparks flying off the set, all of which will help the movie. It’s hard to remember that beneath all the drama that is Jennifer Aniston’s life, she can act. In fact, she can be funny and dramatic. She’s like-able, she’s got "it" with movie audiences. This 1 – 2 punch needs to deliver a KO to Alice, it’s about that time.

Repo Men feels like a movie that would be released in March, by that I mean it could be horrific. Now that also means, it could be fantastic, but with Jude Law and Forest Whitaker in a film that seems to have action and comedy, it seems to have a recipe for success. Since it is not being released in April or May, that can mean only one thing — it isn’t going to be profitable. It seems the film, like most in the dark comedy genre, could be a major flop. At best it could gain a cult status and have some nice DVD and Blu-ray sales, at worst it could dissapear off the radar completely. Don’t let this get you down though, you never know until you see it. Look for the Gotchamovies review soon to see how my prediction stacked up.

The Runaways is going into limited release this weekend. Starring Kristen Stewart (or K-Stew as I like to say) of Twilight fame, the movie represents a departure for Stewart. Playing the role of Joan Jett, the film centers around the turbulent success of the groundbreaking ’70s band. Stewart, much like co-star Robert Pattinson, are trying to slowly bridge the massive success of Twilight into an acting career. Remember Me and The Runaways both attempt to accompllish the same thing for each actor. So, the success of this film will depend on how it performs in a limited release, and how well the critics receive it. The potential is there, but this is a film aiming at quality of art, rather than quantity of money.
Enjoy your weekend at the movies.
