finding a way to build up the body’ Ben shares, ‘The crystal meth addicts I spent time with were active individuals and were lifting a lot of weights. They were going for hours so their bodies were huge but really dehydrated. It was like being a pitbull.’ As well as fighting others, in one scene Ben gets attacked by a fraught and emotional Sharon Stone. ‘That was a tough scene’ he admits, ‘Sharon’s for real. It wasn’t just anger for me but anger for her - she was angry with herself. It was a deep day.’

While some of his co-stars got to meet the real-life inspiration for their characters Ben confesses that he never managed to meet his counterpart. Although he did find out what eventually happened to him after the credits rolled. ‘His story is tragic’ he states, ‘He fell deeper into his addictions and ended up robbing his aunt’s house and going to prison.’

Next up for Ben is another change of scenery. He’s just finished the much-anticipated horror film 30 Days of Night, alongside Josh Hartnett and Melissa George and he’s just started another recently reinvigorated genre piece - a western. ‘I’m actually learning to horse-ride right now for a film called 3:10 to Yuma with Russell Crowe and Christian Bale’ he tells, ‘It’s a western directed by James Mangold. Should be out next October’

A man of many faces, Ben Foster is building up an impressive resume. From skinny villain to buff superhero to strung-out junkie, the young actor has covered an amazing number of bases in a short amount of time. Just no-one mention The Punisher, okay?
