Halle Berry’s schedule seems like it won’t be clearing up anytime soon. Ever since her Oscar-winning performance in Monsters Ball, she has acquired herself a spot amongst Hollywood’s elite. Despite her ongoing marital troubles, Halle has maintained that her career comes first and much to Halle’s delight, it seems that all the dedication and hard work has paid off. We spoke with Halle about her latest lead role as Catwoman.
As Patience Phillips/Catwoman, Halle was able to do something she has never done before. Perhaps the allurement of playing the sole superhero in a movie is the insurmountable creativity that comes along with it, and in Halle’s words, her attraction to the character was the fact that she was, “confident, sexy, powerful, and someone I wanted to play.” Although Halle seems like she possessed all of those traits in real life, Halle humbly admits, “I got a good act going on. And people believe it! That’s lovely!”
Halle likes the idea of an empowered woman, and that is what she feels that the character of Catwoman embodies, saying, “I think as women we suffer because we’re expected to be a certain way in society. Or at least I’ve been taught to be subservient to men and I wouldn’t be complete unless I had a man and Catwoman teaches us that we don’t need a man to be happy. I wasn’t taught that as a kid, I’m learning that as an adult.” Halle continues by saying, “As I get older I get more confident. I learn new tricky life lessons and I start to care less about what everyone else thinks.”
Obviously the research that must be done when playing the role of Catwoman is the studying of the physical aspects and personality traits of a cat. Halle really never was a cat person, as convincing as she was as Catwoman. She does tell us that she did have to become a cat person in order to make the role appear convincing: “If I had to play a dog I’d know how to do it. I adopted a cat and I tried to emulate as many cat-like movements as I possibly could.”
Halle felt the power of confidence also came from wearing the sexy black leather cat-suit that she wore around the set: “I felt really confident and I felt a difference because everyone reacted to me. Everyone stood back and they were afraid to approach me and when they did, it was with the utmost respect and kindness. It made me feel empowered.” With five more leading roles in films just around the corner, it looks like Halle’s crusade for empowerment will keep growing.
