When the initial buzz of James Franco first circulated through the gossip magazines, it was when he was chosen to portray James Dean in the made for TV film, James Dean. His uncanny resemblance to the actor was obvious with his thick and glossy dark hair, piercing brown eyes and sensuous full lips, but the similarities didn’t stop there. His quiet demeanor likened him to the alluring mystery that was James Dean, and to this day, it remains the same. Franco manages to stay out of the Hollywood spotlight but his cryptic aura is what makes his private life sacred, even when he stars in the most publicized film of the year, Spider-Man 2
Franco’s mystery can be chalked up to shyness. He answers his questions with nervous laughter and little pauses and he seems completely unaffected by his success as an actor. Acting ironically is a way to combat shyness and Franco found that when he devoted his talents to acting, he simultaneously learned to come out of his shell: “I was shy and I found acting was a way to express myself and it has helped me overcome whatever shyness I had.”
Franco’s passion for acting is quite obvious. He seems to love becoming someone else and throwing all his energies into a role. He asserts himself as he talks about what he loves most, saying, “I still get the charge of acting. I become more free and alive, especially on stage you feel the audience… and in a movie everyone’s invested in.”
Spider-Man 2 was definitely a film that plenty of people invested their time in, as Franco adds, “In all the scenes we do together everything is well discussed” (Between director Sam Raimi, Tobey Maguire and himself).
Franco’s character of Harry Osborne possibly turning into a second green goblin in the third installment doesn’t seem too likely when Franco was asked about this: “There’s been a setup since the first film for my character. We had the green goblin in Spider-Man One, so I don’t think we will repeat the first one.”
Franco’s career is certainly on the rise and he doesn’t seem to mind one bit: “I like to be busy but I’ve also been more selective with projects. If I have a month or two off, I might do a play here and there.” With four up-coming projects it looks like Franco won’t be bored anytime soon.
