movies, then you probably won’t go to see this film. But you’ll hear about it from other people talking about it, and it’ll hopefully make you want to see it. …I just feel like if you don’t like this movie, you don’t have a pulse. It’s a difficult movie not to like.”

His comments are interesting, in no small part because it speaks to the word-of-mouth Hairspray hopes to capitalize on. Musicals, even big-ticket ones like Hairspray (and Dreamgirls and Chicago before it), tend to open slowly and build a rabidly loyal following gradually. That said, no one can accuse Marsden of being unrealistic about the Hairspray potential for widespread success.

He explains, “I’m always surprised if there’s a good response to a movie because so many things have to align to make a movie work, and nobody’s got the right formula. You can better your odds by doing a great ad campaign, [getting] the right stars in the movie. Hairspray been around since 1988, the [original] John Waters movie, so it has a following, but to be honest… I’m always surprised, I guess is what I’m saying. It doesn’t pretend to be a public service announcement. The best way to make an impact on somebody is… well, first of all through music, but secondly, nobody wants to feel that they’re being forced to think a certain way, or feel a certain way. And I think Adam was very conscious of that.”

“Having said that… the movie is energetic, it’s colorful, the songs are great, the costumes are ridiculous, the hair is ridiculous, whatever… but all of that would be sort of hollow and ornamental if there wasn’t this underlying weight to the movie, which is the idea of… the capacity with which people have to hate others, or fear something that’s different than you.”

So what’s up next for the soft-spoken Oklahoman? First, a Disney movie called Enchantment starring Amy Adams and Patrick Dempsey, and then the romantic comedy 27 Dresses with another “Grey’s Anatomy” star – Katherine Heigl.

Despite his humble demeanor, the limelight is just fine with Marsden: “It’s a very exciting year, not a very subtle one for me [laughs], ...
