Jennifer Hudson
Interview By: Rocco Passafuime Jennifer Hudson is undoubtedly one of Hollywood’s most unexpected new talents to emerge this decade. She started out as a mere contestant on the TV competition megahit American Idol, emerging as a finalist, only to end up being slammed by notorious judge Simon Cowell and being the sixth to be voted off. Then things radically changed when she landed a coveted role as the overlooked, but soulful showstopper singer Effie James in the long-awaited big-screen adaptation of the musical Dreamgirls. In only her feature film debut, Hudson managed to win an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Now, Jennifer Hudson is out to prove she’s no one trick pony as an actress with a role in the long-awaited movie follow-up to the hit HBO TV comedy Sex & The City. She plays new character, Louise, the personal assistant of newspaper columnist Carrie Bradshaw. When asked about whether Jennifer felt any bit at all nervous playing the new girl in what has been for long a familiar environment for millions of female viewers, the 26 year-old said she had little to fear. “I was more nervous for the audition, of course,” Hudson replies, “But they made me feel very welcome and right at home because it’s like one big huge happy family and they don’t need anybody else. I’m like the newcomer, so I’m the new baby of the family. I love it. Dreamgirl and Sex & The City girl, that’s hot. I like that.” Not only is this only Hudson’s second film role, but her first where she doesn’t have to sing, which she doesn’t mind at all. “I love that,” she says, “I’ve been looking for a role where I didn’t have to sing. I want to just act, too. I don’t mind singing and acting in the film, but I don’t want every film to be like that and every role to be like that.” However, when she was chosen to play the role of Louise, Jennifer says she had little knowledge on the TV series. “Well, I had to prep for the part and the audition, too,” Hudson recalls, “I wasn’t aware. I mean, of course, if you watch the show, you have no choice but to be a fan, but I had never watched the show before. I knew of the show, but I never got the chance to see it and once I started reading the script and then, watching the footage, the DVD’s and everything for the audition, that’s when I fell in love with it.” We took that opportunity to also ask Hudson what character on the TV series is her favorite. “I’d say Charlotte, because she’s like the more wholesome, traditional girl and that’s more like me. So I think I relate to Charlotte the most,” Jennifer replies. She says that despite the character’s considerable differences from the four main girls, Hudson notes that the new character of Louise is one not only that she could relate to, but also adds a new dimension to the movie. “What ... |
