Katharine McPhee
Interview By: Rocco Passafuime She gave audiences a serious case of “McPheever” as the 2006 runner-up of American Idol. Now, after scoring two top 40 hits with the singles “Over It” and her stunning rendition of the classic Wizard Of Oz staple “Somewhere Over The Rainbow”, 24 year-old Katharine McPhee is preparing to widen her Idol stardom into a new realm, acting. She hopes to mint her first major acting debut in the new comedy The House Bunny. Starring Anna Farris, McPhee plays free-spirited and pregnant sorority sister Harmony, of which she was more than gracious to explain to us the fundamentals of. “I would say Harmony is more of a follower and is obviously more of the free spirited of the bunch, hence that she is pregnant and don’t know where her husband is,” Katharine explains, “ She doesn’t really take much convincing definitely because Shelly, Anna Faris’s character, comes in and a lot of them are a lot more skeptical.” “And I’m kind of more like once I see somebody getting their mind changed, I kind of go with it,” she continues, “I’m actually one of the few that’s actually excited about getting a makeover, because I’m just not quite getting the bohemian, hippie thing down. Instead of wearing Gladiator sandals, she’s wearing Burkenstal.” We asked McPhee if she preferred her character before or after her makeover. “Pre-makeover. I like both,” she replies. Katharine claims that having to play a pregnant college girl in the film wasn’t all that difficult for her. “It wasn’t hard on my lower back,” McPhee claims, “It was just kind of itchy at times in all different locations of the body.” She says the toughest experience about doing The House Bunny was actually a pig fight with one of the characters. “I felt bad for the pig,” she recalls, “Because Dana Goodman, she plays the kind of butch-like character. She had to wrestle the pig down to the ground and I was like, (in dramatic voice) please, be careful with the pig! Then, it really wasn’t in a cage. It was kind of in a pen and I was like, (in dramatic voice) does he have to be in that pen the whole day?” “They were like, yes, please stay away from the animal,” McPhee adds, “Animal trainers are very serious about their animals. It was fun, but it was definitely a challenge to get it to stop screaming and get it to go in the direction that you want it to go.” We asked McPhee what she felt was the biggest surprise of doing a comedy like The Bunny House. “The biggest surprise is what you can do with a Wonderbra,” Katharine claims. Since the film is a comedy, we asked Katharine if she got to do any improvisation with her character. “I didn’t really improvise all that much, but I got to make suggestions, which was really cool,” she replies, “I really thought Harmony should be eating as much as possible. So I had a good peanut butter jar there.” Katharine says she enjoyed ... |
