 The fans were out in full-force during the filming of the movie in New York City, which made it difficult to keep certain things under wraps. “When we got to the filming everybody knew about it,” she says. “It was not just a little show on cable any more, it was Sex and the City. And a lot of people have been coming over because of the dollar exchange. It’s like half-price everything so they’re walking down the street of New York and there is like this fairy tale going on right to the right or the left of them and everybody has their cameras—movie cameras, video cameras—so it became like an event. I remember looking at the Post and they said ‘Tomorrow their location will be…’ and I thought, ‘Isn’t there a law against this?!’ We’re already bringing in the audience and we haven’t even made the movie yet, but they were so excited to see us. I mean that first day was overwhelming there was like 300 people on Park Avenue.” Everything seemed to work out, but there was a time when it looked like a Sex and the City movie wasn’t going to happen. There was talk of a big-screen version almost immediately after the series ended, but it didn’t pan out right away. Rumor had it that Cattrall was the one holding up the proceedings. What made her hesitate? “I look back 4 years ago…I look back at that time as a particularly tough time because the show was coming to an end and it had been, for all of us, the best working experience,” she says. “Great scripts, wonderful ensemble playing, a show that meant so much to us as women and that was coming to an end and I was going through a divorce and I had been through another divorce in a very private way and this was a very public way and you know it became fodder for headlines and speculation and that was just really a lot for me to deal with. And then shortly after that my dad was diagnosed with dementia so it was like, whoa, ’04 was really a tough, tough year and I felt that I needed a time out. I needed to take care of my real family as opposed to my Sex and the City family and I think we were all tired too.” After a break, Cattrall and her cast-mates finally realized the time was right. “You know it had been an amazing 6 years, 7 years of our lives and when ... |
