Michael Chiklis
Spotlight By: Michael Dance Everybody knows Michael Chiklis from his Emmy and Golden Globe winning performance as the slightly off-the-deep-end detective Vic Mackey. And yep, that's also him, pre-fame, in that oft-syndicated Seinfeld episode as Jerry's unwanted guest. But you can add to his list of memorable performances something that's, quite literally, impressionable: The Thing. I speak of course of his role in Fantastic Four, and its sequel, in theaters now, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. It must be nice to be a superhero, right? "Well, I wish I really had that power," he laughs. "It makes you feel sort of pathetic sometimes. We did a shot the other day where my car’s blocked in, so I just simply go and pick it up and bring it in to the middle of the street and put it down, and jeez, I’d love to be able to do that for real, you know?" Luckily, The Thing (real name: Ben Grimm) is more than just a big brown thing who lifts cars and punches people: "I look at Ben Grimm as really the heart and soul of the Fantastic Four," he says. "He’s the strongest, but he’s the gentle giant, and he’s really all mushy inside. And the idea of him having a love interest, in Alicia [played by Kerry Washington], to me actually makes the role much more satisfying. He’s not just sort of a grumpy curmudgeon who’s just sort of a one-line joke all the time. He has a heart, he has a soul. It’s the thing that makes you love The Thing." There's also a benefit in playing a positive role, unlike the less-than-moral Mackey. "It’s just lovely to take the kids to a movie that I know is appropriate for them, and that they’re going to enjoy, and love, and that I’ll just be right there with them, eating the popcorn and having a great time. It really is just a big fat family film, it’s wonderful." He echoes his other cast members about the scope of this film versus the previous one: "It’s just much bigger. I think in the first one, because we had to lay down a lot of origin track, developing the characters, which is necessary, and I thought quite wonderful, [but] in this one we just get to go right into the action. And the action takes place all over the globe...and bringing the Silver Surfer into this film broadens the scope even further, because he flies all over the world. You know, the sky’s the limit, literally." The big story -- aside from that Silver guy, whoever he is -- is that we actually get to see Chiklis in the flesh in this film instead of under pounds of makeup. Well, for a few minutes at least, thanks to a plot point about Johnny Storm (Chris Evans) being ... |
