Canada is known for its unique staple of actors and Scott Speedman is one of them. After appearing in the Canadian TV series NetWorth, it wasn’t long before he got the attention of Hollywood with a role as love interest Ben Covington on the popular TV drama Felicity.

Since then, Speedman has appeared in a string of films, including Duets, Dark Blue, My Life Without Me, as well as the Underworld series, The 24th Day, and XXX: State Of The Union. Now he appears alongside Liv Tyler as James Hoyt in the horror film The Strangers.

The 32 year old actor first explained to us how first-timer Bryan Bertino, the director of the film, got he and Tyler in the proper mood for the film.

“Bryan got us to watch a bunch of stuff,” Scott recalls, “We watched Halloween. That was a good one to watch. We watched Texas Chainsaw Massacre. We were supposed to watch A Woman Under The Influence.”

Unlike most actors, who balk at the typically cheap and creatively limited world of horror films, Scott says Bertino’s script deeply impressed him and Tyler.

“We both read this script and fell in love with it and quite intrigued with these very bad people they deal with,” he says.

One particular aspect Speedman enjoyed about working with Bertino was his specific, yet flexible directing style.

“I think that’s kind of a nice thing to have,” Scott believes, “The thing you don’t want to have with a first-time director is someone who’s cocksure. It was nice to have somebody that was so confident.”

However, despite a genuinely harmonious working environment with his co-star and the crew, Scott claims filming itself was a rather harrowing experience for everyone.

“We were stressed out the entire time, it felt like, shooting,” Speedman recalls, “What was so tough and exhausting about it was keeping up that level of fear and anxiety everyday. It takes place like over five hours through the whole thing, so Brian didn’t exert too much dictation over how to project what he wanted. If that to me is our job, then we can’t really do anything. To get us there, I feel like that’s our responsibility, to get there everyday and try our best to reach it.”

However, Scott quickly dispelled rumors we inquired over alleged salary disputes. “I wouldn’t say that is true at all,” he replies, “I wish that was true. He’s lying (laughing)! We make good money. We make nice money, but no, not even close. I made $10 million on this. Did I not tell you that (laughing)?”

We also asked Speedman whether he enjoys doing small or bigger budget films.

“I always had more fun for whatever reason on smaller movies,” Scott believes, “I always felt it more personal in a way.”

With The Strangers finally released after being delayed for a year, Scott says as unsure as he is about what he’s going to do next, he’s notes the things he definitely won’t do and wants to do.

“I have no idea, ...
