see more of the girl.’ It was a lot to think about and a lot to handle, and I just think a lesser comedian wouldn’t have been able to handle it.”
And while Miller had to often be the cameraman, the cameraman often had to be him, too. “The camera guy had to wear my pants and shoes in case the camera pointed down,” Miller says. “We never knew that day if we would catch a reflection or turn the camera around too much, either.” Given the seemingly off-the-cuff nature of his performance, Miller is asked how much improv he was able to put throw in. “Well, I think we all did a lot of improv on this film,” he says. “That is my background, I came up in the Chicago comedy scene and toured with Second City. But I think the reason they brought Lizzy [Caplan] and I on this project was because we improvised a lot during the audition and it worked really well. It was a great script, by Drew Goddard, but a lot of the dialogue between the two of us, and a lot of the lines in the film, was improvised.” Given how much audiences are already connecting with the role, Miller might be a breakout star more quickly than he realizes. “I have a really small part in an upcoming Jeremy Piven film that’s really, really funny called The Goods: The Don Ready Story,” he says. “And I do standup all the time. And I’m on a show, called Carpoolers, and hopefully that will continue also because it’s an immensely funny show.” No action/horror/disaster films in there? While he modestly admits that his acting in Cloverfield is “a winning performance – when I watch it, I am in awe of myself,” he isn’t too prepared to revisit the genre anytime soon. “My next film’s not going to be a huge horror film, no. I gotta wait a couple years before I have to scream and breathe hard for hours and hours at a time.” |
