do. It aims for Lost In Translation whimsy but it’s slightness makes that far superior film seem like a heavyweight. There are too many scenes of Freeman and Vega having on-the-nose dialogue about their stereotypically different lives. There are some winning moments however (Freeman going to Target for the first time and being amazed at the low prices for example) but they’re few and far between. The film also criminally underuses the wonderfully funny Kumar Pallana who most will rewcognize from The Royal Tenebaums and The Terminal.
I’m not saying a film has to include a war, a killer or a mismatched pair of talking animals to make it important, but there’s so little in this movie that it starts to feel like a vanity project solely created to give Morgan Freeman some much-needed range. It’s hugely inoffensive and does have an interesting dynamic between the two leads but it’s nothingness means that as I write this review, I can feel any memory of the film escaping my head. Which in such a busy month of December for movies, isn’t a good thing.
Movie Grade: C
Synopsis:
An actor (Freeman) prepping for an upcoming role meets a quirky grocery clerk (Vega), and the pair hit the road to show one another their respective worlds. |
