Jennifer Garner shines as Jenna Rink and carries the weight of the film on her shoulders, graciously and beautifully. She is not only cute and wide eyed but extremely likable. Even the cheesiest of scenes are saved by the infectious Ms. Garner. Mark Ruffalo is the perfect choice for 30 year old Matty as he is not your typical hunk, but broodingly handsome, un-threatening and completely unassuming. The supporting cast is on point with their comedic delivery, especially Andy Serkis (Richard) and Judy Greer (Lucy). As a DVD 13 Going on 30 offers many special features, including tons of deleted scenes and a very interesting “making of”, featuring interviews with the cast.

As silly and patronizing as this film can sometimes be, the throwback to the 80’s with renditions of Thriller and references to Pat Benatar are things you can’t help but smile at. As a light hearted escapist movie that lets you re-live your childhood with a trite little message, this one is better than average, thanks to the performance of Jennifer Garner.
