Date Movie

Review By: Jacques Prudent

I have never been one to be all that into comedy at all, at least not with most of the stuff that is fed to the public these days. There are very few actors and actresses that I feel pull off funny. There are even less movies which I would call funny. I am an old school kinda guy. Older Eddie Murphy movies like Harlem Nights and Coming To America, Richard Pryor classics like The Toy or Mel Brooks gems like Blazing Saddles and his hilarious parody of Star Wars, Spaceballs. Today's comedies just seem empty and cheap, but I gave in and checked out something that looked like it could make me laugh: a film that the commercials sort of made me smile, even crack up for just a second. I have never been more wrong in my entire life.

I will just get right to it. Date Movie is horrible. It is a parody of chick flicks/romantic comedies, that is supposed to be chock full of laughs and scenes that poke fun at most of those cheesy movies that the ladies seem to love so much. I would much rather watch the actual cheese fest of the romantic comedies than sit down and watch this horrid mess of a film.

This is a quick list of what gets spoofed in Date Movie: The Bachelor, King Kong, Meet The Parents, Kill Bill, Pimp My Ride, The Wedding Planner, Jerry Maguire, Hitch, Napoleon Dynamite, How To Lose a Guy In 10 Days, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Sweet Home Alabama, When Harry Met Sally, Lord Of The Rings, Wedding Crashers, Legally Blonde, Meet The Fockers, and My Big Fat Greek Wedding. What the writers could have done was focused on one or two, maybe even three of those films, but all of those films get mashed together into something that is barely cohesive and make something not even resembling sense.

The humor for the most part was disgusting, juvenile and predictable. The acting was worse then expected and the film was just boring. The cast included Alyson Hannigan of American Pie fame, Eddie Griffen, Adam Campbell, Carmen Elektra, and Tony Cox. Why Alyson felt compelled to do this film is beyond me, because she deserves better than this. The script did her no justice, and you can see she tried but even all her acting skills couldn’t save this wreck. Eddie Griffen’s talents could have been used elsewhere as well, sure he isn’t a true headliner but he is better than this. It makes no difference what the plot is or who the characters are; this movie was doomed from the minute the pen hit the pad.

Was there even anything worth chuckling at you ask? Sure, there was a scene that parodied Meet The Parents. The scene where cute Jinxy the cat is sitting on the toilet and Focker walks ...
