like Death Proof lacks the exciting fake trailers in the double feature theatrical release (save for Machete here), this special edition is shown in its uncut 105 minute entirety and with plenty of special features that span across two discs.

On the first disc, the first special feature is audio commentary by writer/director Robert Rodriguez, who is consistently engaging and informative throughout the proceedings. Also included is an exciting audience reaction audio feature, which allows you to recreate the experience of watching the film in the theatre during its premiere screening, complete with applause and laughs. Rounding out the first disc is an exciting poster and lobby card gallery for both Planet Terror and Machete.

The first special feature on disc 2 is a featurette known as “10 Minute Film School With Robert Rodriguez”, which features exciting audio commentary from the writer/director as he discusses the many different exciting filmmaking tricks he employed during its making. Particularly intriguing is Rodriguez’s revelation of a cooking feature that will be included on a future double-disc DVD release of Grindhouse in its original double-feature cut.

“The Badass Babes And Tough Guys Of Planet Terror” is a featurette that discusses the film’s inception as part of Grindhouse, Planet Terror’s characters, and the casting process. It features exciting interviews with Rodriguez, Tarantino, and much of the cast.

“Casting Rebel” is a featurette that discusses Robert Rodriguez’s son Rebel being cast into his film, which features an interview with him, as well as reaction from much of the cast. Particularly intriguing in this featurette are alternate scenes shown where Rebel Rodriguez’s character actually survives, made while father Robert was still in debate about whether or not to kill off the character.

“Sickos: Bullets, And Explosions: The Stunts Of Planet Terror” showcases the amazing stuntwork employed throughout the film, featuring exciting behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with the cast and crew. Rounding out the special features is the featurette “The Friend, The Doctor, And The Real Estate Agent” which discusses and features interviews with the many cameos of Rodriguez’s real-life acquaintances, including Rodriguez’s real-life physician Dr. Felix Sabates, who plays a fictionalized version of himself in the film.

While it doesn’t hit quite as high in the level of inspired genre poking as Tarantino’s Grindhouse entry Death Proof, Robert Rodriguez’s Planet Terror is a consistently exciting, energetic homage to 1970’s exploitation, with fantastic special effects and spot-on elements brought on by its script and highly-skilled cast. Like the release for Death Proof, the lack of the intermission fake trailers included in these special edition stand-alones are a disappointment, but there is still plenty to enjoy here for hardcore fans of the film.
