fits this part and I say play it til you can’t play it any more my friend. J.K. Simmons shows another new side of himself as a very not typical for screen, but probably pretty typical for life laid back dad who supports Juno in her decisions and rolls with the quirky punches as she throws them. Allison Janney is wonderful as the non-stereotypical step mom who may at times be a pain in the ass, but is definitely always on the right side. And finally our perfect on the surface couple, Jennifer Garner and Jason Bateman are perfect both on the surface and beneath it as well. There’s not a moment where you question the conviction of these actors in these roles.
Special features wise the DVD offers up a ton of good stuff. The deleted scenes of course start things off and then the not so funny outtake reel which was kind of disappointing is second. What didn’t let us down, however, is the next generation of ‘bloopers’ - the gag scene; thanks to the leaking of the I Heart Huckabees melt down video
many films have started filming scenes that are supposed to be huge real life blow out fights, but in actuality are just scripted, that’s what they do here and to good effect.
For some reason they also filmed a music video where the cast and crew jump around to some song that I can’t seem to name. Not exactly sure what this adds, but it shows that they were having a good time on set I guess.
Screen tests are always a nice extra but often times are really low quality and somewhat brief; with Juno it’s the exact opposite. The screen tests with actors are all very high quality and quite lengthy. It’s interesting to see the growth of Ellen Page’s performance as Juno from these early tests to what we ultimately see in the film. She clearly worked very hard on fully developing this character. Michael Cera is exactly the same in the tests as he is in the film, but like I said earlier, do it as long as ya can man. There are several screen tests and after the second or third you kinda get the picture but can’t be mad at them for extra, extra material now can we? Rounding out the features are some behind the scenes featurettes which are watchable but nothing over the top fantastic.
Overall, this is a great movie that I think will resonate with a lot of different kinds of people and is definitely worth seeing if you haven’t already.
