If you like surprises, SAW is chock full of them. Twists and turns in the plot keep you interested at points where and episode of The Simple Life seems to appear more and more appealing. The supporting roles of Mrs. Gordon, played wonderfully by Monica Potter, and Detective Tapp, played by Danny Glover, were a huge addition to the tremendously flawed cast. Though I wouldn’t have used a big star such as Glover in this role – I have to admit that I was thoroughly impressed with the intensity of his performance as the newly retired and obsessed former detective hot on the trail of the man they deemed with the name, “Jigsaw”.
In the end, the best way to judge a DVD’s worth is by, what I call, the “Buy it/Rent it Factor.” SAW would fall under the “Rent it” category. The extras, which are often a determining factor for a person’s decision in purchasing a DVD, only include an audio commentary by director, James Wan, and actor/writer, Leigh Whannel (after an hour and a half of him in the actual film, I wasn’t willing to listen). Besides commentary, the only other real extras are TV/Trailer spots, in which a one time viewing can suffice, and a Fear Factory music video, which is primarily suited for true Fear Factory fans. Do you really think non-fans are going to watch both the rated and unrated versions, and then sit through a featurette on how they made it? Probably not.
