resist this great film due to the language, but as with any film, the original language is still the best way to watch it. The DVD also contains plenty of special features.
The first is highly informative audio commentary by director Julian Schnabel. Next is “Submerged: The Making Of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly”, which contains plenty of behind-the-scenes footage, as well as great interviews with the cast and crew.
The featurette “A Cinematic Vision” focuses on director Julian Schnabel and his unique approach to directing the film. Rounding out the special features is Schnabel’s interview on PBS’s The Charlie Rose Show.
All in all, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly presents a triumph-against-adversity story that is told in a rare and realistic combination of lament and hope. Its distinctly French film adaptation, to its credit, manages to not water down the original memoir like in so many Hollywood films, but enhance its already distinct uniqueness cinematically as well, making it an absolutely worthy view.
