Matt’s friends Eli (Chris Marquette), a sex-starved AV student, Klitz (Paul Dano), a kid with low self-esteem, and Kelly (Timothy Olyphant) who is Danielle’s porn producer. Kelly shows up and tries to get Danielle back into making movies and is the bad guy in the film. He looks like a deranged Ryan Seacrest, which might be somewhat redundant.
A lot of the comedy in the film comes from Matt and his friends as fish out of water in
the world of pornography. The romance is evident between Danielle and Matt. The actors that play them have chemistry. Their relationship is actually quite sweet as they are willing to give their all to make it work and can see past each others short comings. They are good for each other as Danielle challenges Matt making him do things he never thought he could, stepping outside of who he was while challenging his notions of moral fiber. Thirdly it’s a film about friendship and helping each other when it is needed most.
The film took me by surprise. I didn’t expect it to be as well rounded as it is. It has numerous funny moments, but these are balanced with a sweet touch of romance and true acts of friendship. You may notice some similarities to Risky Business (the 1980’s Tom Cruise dancing in his underpants movie), but even so its been successfully updated for a modern audience.
The extras are pretty thorough including several behind the scenes featurettes, deleted scenes, and a gag reel.
