Terrence Howard served his purpose. Jesse Eisenberg was surprisingly effective as the naïve, “I’m scared out of my wits” friend. (This last statement might just be in comparison because I saw Conan the Destroyer the night before and was embarrassed at Tracey Walter’s attempt at the same stereotypical character). What I’m getting at here is that everything was just kind of adequate. The over-handed political message and the rare good laugh left me wanting more. The emotional moments of the movie were well done, and the suspense was interesting but only with the knowledge of this being a true story. The movie isn’t really set up like a war drama, it seems like much more of a road trip comedy, but somehow fails at that. The UN representative that thinks our journalists are a CIA hit squad provided for some humor, but not much else was pulling at me. The stakes of a political comedy-drama should be much higher and less simplified then this movie made them out to be.

Granted, I still enjoyed myself but not enough to really recommend this. I’m glad I am now aware that the message the movie got across exists. Very glad in fact. But other than that, I didn’t find this comedy funny and I didn’t really get that emotionally worked up about the drama. I did like the characters, their chemistry, and especially liked the story. However, nothing stood out as making this movie really that above average. Hence my grade for it being the slightest bit above average.

Movie Grade: C+
