impact of the third mask, the pin up girl looking one didn’t hold up as much for me. The first time it was terrifying, but it lost its steam a little for me.
Both Speedman and Tyler turn in wonderful performances as the terrorized pair. They do of course fall into some of those stereo-typical ‘why-the-hell-would-you-do-that,’ in a horror movie moments, but they pull it off making you believe that in real life people actually would be that stupid! I’ve always said that Scott does better with smaller character based roles and believe it or not that’s what he has to work with here. With very little dialogue to work with, both actors have to make very definite choices for each scene they are in to maintain a steady flow and build up of emotion; that’s a tall order for most, but these two make it look effortless.
The Strangers is definitely opening at the right time, up against the ultimate Romantic Comedy Sex and the City: The Movie and in the wake of the uber fan boy Action Adventure Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, so I’m hoping everyone else will be looking for something a little different; maybe something that’s a little scarier and a little lesser known of a title. I’m sure it will make a killing (pun intended) on DVD but suspense films like this one are really meant to be communal viewing experiences so get off your couch already, turn off your huge flat screen and get yourselves to an actual movie theater for this one!
