*WARNING - Foul and Angry Language Ahead!!! But No Spoilers *

‘More than meets the eye’… my ass!!! This movie is exactly what is visible to the casual on looker and nothing more. Congratulations Big Budget Hollywood once again you’ve managed to fuck up something that should have been very simple.

When you’re dealing with a franchise that has existed for over 20 years and has developed a huge following, you really don’t need to change much to satisfy your target audience. Of course you update the presentation of the material to coincide with the advances of the time and maybe spice it up with a couple of unexpected twists and turns and a new character or two… but that’s it! You don’t try to fix what was never, ever broken; just do the damn thing!

As you might have guessed by now I’m one of those 20-something’s who grew up on the original cartoon version of this film and was incredibly disappointed by this live action farce. Now, before you stop reading let me also assure you just because I was a fan of the original does not invalidate the opinion I am about to set forth. Yes, I loved it. But I don’t remember every episode or every character and expect the movie to be identical. I’m not going to be bitching about small meaningless details here; I promise to only criticize the filmmaking team for the huge blatant slaps in the face they dished out as they picked apart the Transformers genre to suit their needs.

The movie begins with the one and only authenticating aspect of it; a voice over by Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime explaining the history of Cybertron and the war that leads to their landing on Earth. From then on it becomes, as the writers and producers so proudly proclaim, “A movie about a boy and his first car.” Who the fuck gives a shit? You wanna make a movie about that, more power to ya, do it and call it something original like, I dunno, ‘A Boy and His First Car Go on a Trip,” NOT Transformers.

But, I digress. Shy, dorky, virginal, about to turn 17 Sam (Shia LeBouf) goes with his dad to a used car dealership to pick out his first car and ends up buying Bumblebee. You remember Bumblebee, he was the yellow Volkswagon bug from the original cartoon. The one who’s strength of character came from the fact that he wasn’t uber-cool and powerful but courageous and steadfast none the less? The character that every non jock athlete kid looked up to ...
