pissed off Greek monarchs-brothers, Spartan King Agamemnon and Mycenaean King Menelaus. These guys crack me up!

All told, I liked what I saw on the silver canvas. While Troy definitely has its flaws, Brad’s perfect golden tan and Diane’s sexy pout were not one of them. So, relax and enjoy an old-fashioned film made with today’s cinematic technologies. Which brings us to:

DVD

Picture: Warner Bros. hits another home run with their sparkling 2-disc DVD set. Presented in its original aspect ratio of 2.35:1 (anamorphically-enhanced for 16x9 monitors), this flick looks mighty fine. Daytime scenes exhibit a nice, bright golden sheen while nighttime and/or interior scenes exhibit soft, textured photography. A touchdown in my book.
Sound: The Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound is really solid. It really felt like 1000 ships were cruising across my living room! Also available is a French DD 5.1 track and a bunch of subtitles (English, French and Spanish). Can you say “pass the spear” in French? After watching TROY with the subtitles on…you might be able to!
Extras The first disc entails the movie in all of its 162-minute glory. Which leaves us with Disc 2, and a bunch of cool short documentaries (all presented in 16x9 aspect ratio):
In The Thick Of Battle enlightens the viewer with the trials and tribulations of the fantastic battle scenes in Troy. Weapons, training and blocking out sequences are covered in great detail. Solid.
From Ruins To Reality delves into the entire production design. Added in is plenty of on-location footage from Malta to Mexico and you get the idea.
In Troy: An Effects Odyssey explains the use of CGI in the making of this film. Realizing that the filmmakers needed the modern technology to create armies of 70,000 soldiers when they really used 700 is understandable. Personally, I found the CGI to be above-average and most of the sequences to be very well-rendered (pun intended).
Gallery Of The Gods is a really cool, 3-D look at the Gods and Goddesses of Greek mythos. Ironically, the film all but completely ignores them in the finished product. Somewhere, I know that Sir Laurence Olivier is frowning (the late, great thespian portrayed head god Zeus in 1981’s Clash of the Titans).
The Theatrical Trailer …is rather self-explanatory. One last thing is an Easter Egg. On Disc 2’s Special Features menu, highlight In The Thick Of Battle, then click the RIGHT ARROW. The Wooden Horse’s neck lights up; then, press ENTER. What you’ll witness is what life was really like on one of the Trojan warships. Quite grueling I tell ya.
All in all, the extras were cool, but I still felt like something was missing. Maybe they could have thrown in a free shield or sword with a purchase. Who knows?
