30 Days of Night cast talks violence and the MPAA

The cast and crew of the new vampire movie 30 Days of Night were on hand today to discuss their film and dismiss some new rumors. After premiering a particularly intense trailer, and a scene where pretty-boy Josh Hartnett dismembers a little vampire girl, producer Sam Raimi, director David Slade, actor Ben Foster (X-Men, 3:10 to Yuma), and the aforementioned Hartnett talked a little bit about the brutal violence that comes with the territory when adapting a graphic novel.

"We were really nervous about [showing it to the MPAA] at first, and we were grateful for the uncut R we got," said Slade. "It was a very serious concern at one point." So much so actually, that they were forced to edit down the clip they showed to the assembled audience, cutting to black right before Hartnett killed the little girl. Said Josh, "Apparently the implication of killing children is ok, just not showing it."

But before you accuse Slade of being the next Eli Roth (his first movie was the not-for-the-squeamish Hard Candy), he argued, "The violence had to be there, as a part of life. The result of it is that there are a lot of real nasty things in the film, but it was all part of the process of making a realistic, dramatic horror film."

Raimi used to time to address a few rumors circulating as to his next project. He won't be involved in The Hobbit, at least not "right now." And, as of this time, he has no plans to direct another horror movie, preferring instead to produce, which is "all the fun [of directing], without the work."

As to whether or not we'll see another Evil Dead movie from the master of horror, Raimi said "One day, my brother and I would love to write Part 4, but I've been so busy with other [projects] that I haven't had the chance to address it."
